  1. For #3 and #4, maybe you guys could all get together and make one official central link website database thingie for all these scenarios. Even if they're hosted in a bazillion different places, at least have one d*mn site which points to them all, is well organized, has a nice little review thingie, let's the user view them in different arrangements, (by newest, by medium, by Allied vs AI, you know). Well dang that would help I think. The way it is now... Yuk.

Eden, this is the idea behind The Scenario Depot:

    http://ns9.super-hosts.com/~dragonlair.net/combatmission/

It might not be the easiest site to use (I find the new buttons baffling... It took me forever to realize that the text for each button is in the headline, and changes on mouseover... Alt text would be helpful), and it pretty much just lists the scenarios alphabetically, but it does attempt to list all the scenarios out there. Haunted Hill is listed, for example (and unreviewed)

  2. I rather liked the demo scenarios. The tutorial is quite a challenge to win with the germans, and the Citadel scenario was something I hadn't really seen before (and it does have some fairly large hills.)

I would have liked to see a highly detailed map that pushed the scenario editor to its limits ala Fertile Fields? Well, yes, and that's the kind of thing I'm going to use to sell my nonCM owning friends on the game... I was one of the people who bought the original based on the hills in VOT. I can hardly wait to get my hands on the map editor and see what I can do...

However. The CMBB demo is still pretty generous as demos go. There is no time limit, no expiration date, and the scenarios aren't really crippled in any way (unless you happen to not like them, in which case I suppose you could say that they are crippled by their lack of goodness). I can think of several wargames that I paid perfectly good money for that can't say as much. The demo, is, of course, free.

  3. Yes, I know you did (and thanks again), but I still think that they oughtta be up somewhere. You know, for newbies. It's all well and good for people like me who already know they exist, since I can come on here and ask for 'em, but the newbies are deprived of the pleasure of having a tiny little hamster in a miniature black tanker outfit raining death and destruction on the allies from the turret of his King Tiger.

  4. I recently had to reinstall my CM mods, and I managed to find everything I had before (thanks to Kump's wonderful new catalog o' mods) except for the mod that changed all the soldiers faces to hamsters. I'm talking about the one that replaced the in game faces, not the portraits. IIRC this was on Kitty's site (www.fluffkitty.com) which appears to be down.

So I was wondering if some kind soul could email me a copy? (I know, I'm wierd, but those hamsters just look so cute driving around in tiger tanks...)

edit: Someone already sent me a copy, Thanks a bunch!

  5. Well, BoB is more about a community that happens to also have a ladder. So I suppose I count as a ladder player. Other than my preference for small battles, I happily play just about any type of battle under any restrictions my opponent cares to name. I consider it an ethical obligation to my opponent try my best to win, but I that obligation doesn't extend to setup types and negotiation. That is, I don't start trying to win at the negotiation stage.

As for things like Uber tanks, I always like it when my opponent buys them. That's one of the many things infantry is for.

I dunno. Wine for playing CM. I'd still be here even if every battle was me attacking a battalion with a platoon of conscripts.

Treeburst: I'm a bit busy this weekend, so I'll try and get my setup done tomorrow.

  6. As far as size goes, I'd like to see at least one small (1000 points or fewer) battle.

I actually prefer small fights, so really, I'd like them all to be small... Seeing as how I'm probably in a minority of one on this point, I'm only gonna agitate for one small battle.

On restrictions, I'll happily play under any ruleset (or no rulesets). All I ask is that flak trucks not be allowed.

  7. It's been a while since I looked at the zips with my skies, but IIRC, the images with labels like "falldawn.jpg" are just screenshots with no actual impact on the game. The game files are all numbered.

Files with names like 1400b.bmp and 1400c.bmp are alternate skies for a particular season. I keep meaning to go back and make them CMMOS compatible, but that would mean downloading and learning CMMOS (and wouldn't be helpful to people on a mac in any case.)

  8. The maps weren't based on anything in particular actually. (There had to be a river and a road and a railway that matched the campaign map on each, but other than that I had free reign...)

As for reviews, I submit them whenever I finish a scenario. I just reviewed a couple of your maps though... smile.gif

Hmm. And all this time I thought captured enemy units were more valuable than killed enemy units. (Of course, I have no idea why I thought that...) If true, it gives me a whole new use for my 2in mortars. ("OK, I want all you prisoners to stand right here in this clearing...") :D

  10. Well, I'll give a briefing an OK rating if it tells me what I have, what my objectives are, and a rough idea of what I am expected to face. Unusual victory conditions should also be listed (ie: you only "really" win if Major Beery makes it to the tavern alive.) That takes, like, two sentences. And it's ok (encouraged, even) to lie about reinforcements and enemy strength.

Anything beyond that (history, suggested reading, a nice little story) only adds.

I'll mark down for spelling if it's terrible, but a typo or two is no big deal (it's not one of my pet peeves (unlike bumpy water) )

  11. I've reviewed a few scenarios over at the scenario Depot, and at the start I would just rate a scenario based on general feel. Then I decided that this was arbitrary in a way that was maybe unfair to the scenario designers (Ok, I designed a scenario and saw how hard it was to get it right...) So I've started to use a more consistent approach where I assume everything starts at 10 and mark off points from that (this is similar to the way one might grade a test).

A scenario would have to be pretty vile to score a one or a two (non existent briefing, or a briefing with lots of swearing and l337 d00dz spelling would get a 0 or 1 respectively) Most of my scores will be in the 6-10 range.

Then it occurred to me that some of you might be using 5 as baseline for an 'average' scenario, in which case your scores will be in the 3-7 range, even for a pretty good scenario.

I'm not suggesting that changes be made (I doubt we could reach a consensus smile.gif ), I'm just kind of curious as to what methods (and/or criteria) people are using when they hadn out those ratings.

(also this give me another chance to plug my Knife fight at Cannes scenario. Also is it "knife fight", "knife-fight" or "knifefight"? My dictionary didn't say so I assumed the first, but it always seems strange to write. )
