  1. what happens if you call in arty out of LOS, but achieve LOS to your target before the timer runs out? are the shots spread as if it was a non-LOS call?

  3. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Snake Eyes: The Panther was the best all-round tank of WWII, IMHO. However, I prefer the JSIIm. Reasonable speed, good armor and a whopping 122mm main gun. Even a near miss could take out an enemy AFV. Infantry positions and bunkers can easily be smashed with such a large caliber weapon. It carried only 28 rounds (10 AP, 18 HE basic load) and had a slow rate of fire due to its two part ammo. However, I think it will be a real killer in CM2. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Was that 122 an artillery gun (like the sherman 75) or an AT gun mounted on a tank? I think I recall reading that a 88/71 could outpenetrate it by a large margin, but I'm not sure. I remember it was hindered by a bad ballistic cap due to the 2 piece shell, and that it wasn't the greatest of tank killers...
  4. I haven't seen any messages about the progress of working that out, or the estimated time it would take. Sorry if I missed it. I tried a search. BTS?
  5. Cleaned it up a bit. 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKINGS WERE HUNG, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON A NAIL HUNG FATIGUES, IN THE CORNER AN OLD M1 GARAND, WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A CALM SOBER THOUGHT, CAME INTO MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, IT WAS THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, I REALIZED SO CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, ALONE, ON THE FLOOR, HIS ARMS WERE HIS PILLOW, HE REQUIRED NO MORE. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM, SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED, A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE GREAT HERO, OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR HIS BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES, THAT I SAW ON THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS, WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE, A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM, EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER, HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE, IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. AND THINKING OF THIS, BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES, AND I STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED, I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;" I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE , MY LIFE IS 'MY GOD', 'MY COUNTRY', 'MY CORPS'." THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, AND WENT BACK TO SLEEP, BUT I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL, THE TWO OF US SHIVERED, FROM THE COLD WINTERS CHILL. I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE, ON THAT COLD, WINDY, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR, SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, AND WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL'S SECURE." ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."
  6. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by rune: The debug code is contained inside the .exe itself. No debug code is run if you go back to the old .exe. Rune<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Thats actually not 'debug code' means at all, in programming terms. But to answer the question, the 1.1 beta isn't a "patch", as it probably will be in the future. It doesn't change the original CM executable at all. Its an entirely new executable file that won't do any damage to the old one - so the old cm is the same as it was.
  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Olle Petersson: That doesn't make sense, as before the orders phase, the host, I assume, says 'Ok, 180 seconds left to issue orders' If you were to finish your orders, but NOT click the 'go' button, you'd be able to see the counter keep counting down to 0, so you know how much time your opponent dissapears. Theres no reason to have the counter stop when you hit 'go', as it doesn't need to communicate with the other client to keep counting down. This is a minor interface issue, but something I'd like to see correcteed. Also... I'd rather see minutes:seconds than listing in just seconds. But thats a preference.
  8. It looks very promising, I think. It has a few bugs to be errored out, but they're workable and probably quick to fix. There seems to be problems with establishing a session while CM isn't in the active window, but thats easy enough to fix. One complaint, though, is that after picking an OOB for a QB(and that can take a good 5-10 minutes), if you get a tcp error, it will drop you back to the main menu and you'll have to redo the entire QB. I had to pick my OOB 3 times before we had a succesful run of the game. I recommend a system wherein CM 'remembers' your last qb settings/oob and gives you the option of recreating them if necesary. The transfer rate seems to be perfectly adequate. I haven't waited more than 10 seconds on a 1250 point game on a 56k. A few things I noticed lacking about the interface: A chat log is needed... if I get up for a few minutes during a pause, or what have you, anything my opponent has said will be erased permanently. An optional chat window that pops up and displays the last X number of lines would be helpful towards that. Also, another interface oddity.. If you're on a timer, and you click 'go' before the timer is up, the timer itself won't display on your screen anymore. It will merely display 'Waiting for opponent to finish issuing orders', or somesuch. It would be nice to see how much time is left in the turn. Also, I didn't see anything about it in the doc, but on board mortars seem to have lost accuracy. Has anyone else noticed this? It could just be a fluke, but they seem to be much less accurate overall. Once the bugs are worked out, though, this patch looks like it could be all we've hoped for.
  9. This isn't so much a CM question as a general one. If the doctrinal purpose of the sherman was to be an infantry support tank, than why was the short 75 barrel the most common variant, rather than the 105? Is there any advantage the 75 offers over the 105 in the infantry support role? ROF is the only factor I can think of, but I think it would offset by the larger firepower. Was there a hollow charge round for the 105? Even if not, I'd imagine one could be made. And as far as doctrine goes, you'd only really need those HE shells. I suppose the 75 can be superior in engaging multiple light vehicles. As a whole, though, you'd expect, if the cost was roughly equal, the 105 to be much more prevalent than it was historically. At least, from what I've read... its usage was a relatively rare specialty, rather than being in significant numbers like the 76. This has just been a curiosity of mine. Thanks for any help in advance.
  10. My understanding of this is that they trained the dogs to smell out the diesel exhaust from the tanks. The germans used gasoline engines in their tanks, and the russians, of course, diesel. Obvious result: don't give man's best friend high explosive. I have a funny image of germans strapping mines to captured dogs...
