How about a pre-war movie? One of Charlie Chaplain's best, and first (I think) talkie, The Great Dictator. Great spoof on the Germans and Italians. Plus, that speech at the end has been conceded as one of the top 50 moments in movies. Not a whole lot of war action, but it's still a classic.

Well, if you go that far back Duck Soup/Marx Brothers is a VERY funny political/military spoof as well.

  2. Sorry to clog the message board (picture an oompa-loompa kneeling and cry out for forgiveness).

    Hey Nav,

Your email is not going through! I keep getting the following message--

quote:
This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:

Each of the following recipients was rejected by a remote mail server.

The reasons given by the server are included to help you determine why

    each recipient was rejected.

    Recipient: <Nav's email address here>

Reason: Requested mail action aborted: exceeded storage allocation.

I've tired zipped and non-zipped files.

Any ideas? If the problem is on my end (which I don't think it is b/c I've been sending much longer messages to folks) Email me and let me know.

    Check out http://www.cyndislist.com/oral.htm

Geneaology is my other hobby, and genealogists have a wealth of information on how to conduct meaningful and sensitive oral interviews. There are even forms on how to conduct oral interviews with veterans.

Some points I keep in mind:

    1) Be PREPARED beforehand! Use the resources from the url above. Have your questions written out and organized beofrehand. Have a timeline of the war ready and ask them where they were on important dates-"How did you hear about the surrender?", etc..

    2) I usually, have someone show me pictures or memoribilia [sp?] and the stories just start flowing. It's much easier to work your questions around recollections that are naturally occuring. It's also much less pushy, invasive and forced if you follow their lead rather than trying to lead them.

    3) Don't forget to bring a tape recorder AND a blank tape.

    4) Most important--make certain the interviewee gets a chance to edit/explain/clarify what you have written. Nothing makes people more angry than feeling they have been misrepresented.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Ok, as long as this thread as started to drift off topic, let me say...ahem...

I never much cared for SHERMAN Hemsley either. He too, was small, lacked in puch, and tended to explode (albeit emotionally) at the drop of a hat. Although, the cry of "Wheezie!" did bring fear into many hearts.

    There....I feel better now...really, i do. wink.gif

If you want to prove me wrong, make an insigna on the side of the helmet. You can't do it cause the insigna will repeat on the lower part of the helment.

Go ahead and prove me wrong. It can't be done. Period.

I hope you do prove me wrong but I can't see how.

  6. I use the magnificantion buttons a lot. But hardly ever use the directional arrows. When I do use them I usually just overshoot whatI'm trying to look at.

  7. BTS and CM got another mention in the gaming press.

In the upcomming Nov edition of PC GAMER (yeah, I read it..please no flames) Jeff Lapkoff, an independent maker of medival combat games notes,

"Games like Combat Mission probably represent the tip of the iceberg for future wargamming, from a production standpoint. Almost anything that a major publisher will even consider has to have some element of 3D.It's what the market demands. Up to now though only the majors could give you real 3D. Combat Mission proves that an indie company can do that as well." (pg. 203) -emphasis added-

Nice to see that BTS is recognized as a role model for other independent game developers. Way to go BTS! I hope the big developers aren't taking aim to shoot down BTS(pardon the pun).

I don't think they'd be able to anyway. I can't see big comapnies being as responsive as BTS to player sugestions. Hence, I can't see the big companies (3D or not) really churing out quality wargames. Then again, I AM a CM addictso my opinion is certainly biased biggrin.gif

Looks as if the 3D approach to wargames is going to spread.

In other words, if you licensed the CM engine, you would be selling your product mainly to CM fans. I don't think many companies would regard this as commercially viable (and remember that BTS exists through shunning most people's ideas of commercial viability).

Just thought I'd toss this out for information sake. It looks like CM's engine has gotten A LOT of notice in other companies, and may even be reshaping the wargamming field.

I'm not sure if I believe this or not, I'd certainly like to though. I hopethat BTS is not the target for ALL wargame developers. I think I'll post this quote on it's own thread to let the board have some discussion on it.
