1.
quote:
Originally posted by weasel: I don't think that pointing out that real-world tanks don't typically fire rounds through the corners of buildings is a demonstration that I don't know what the heck I'm talking about. [snip] ...there are very real, and very fixable LOS issues with this game.

I have to agree here. I once played a game in which a mortar unit spent his entire useful career trying to get LOS. I posted about this earlier (see "LOS woes"). I had moved the unit to what appeared to be a fortuitous position, only to find his LOS blocked. Move again, still blocked, etc, ad naseum. In each case the LOS function had "gone red" just barely in front of the unit. Unless I am misinterpreting something, this tells me that the lack of LOS was caused by the fact that the unit could not see over the "lip" between the terrain tile he was sitting on and the next. That next terrain tile angled down with respect to the one the unit was sitting on. His eyeballs would have to be in his toes. Of course, moving him just over the lip didn't deem to help matters. As pointed out by weasel, it seems ridiculous that when I switch to the ground-level view and see a clear view of my intended target over the shoulder of my unit, his LOS is blocked by... what? More importantly, why the "I know better than you" speech? I don't recall anyone here claiming that fixing the problem was supposed to be easy. But it is a problem. In fact, I'm very surprised there hasn't been a lot more discussion about it. Perhaps that means I have a grevious misunderstanding of the way LOS works? erl

Tank crews still have to breath too.

Umm, all explosives contain an oxidizer (i.e. black powder, a LE), or are composed of a compound (i.e. TNT) which breaks down into a fuel/oxidizer combo. You think HE sucks its oxygen out of the atmosphere? erl
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by Der Unbekannte Jäger: Thin Red Line ..where am I, oh still here, and why am I still here at this pathetic movie....

Well said! This movie was simply awful! Nothing but guys looking around. Show this guy looking around, pan to that guy, looking around, cut to another guy, looking around, for like hours!
 4. Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere; I can't seem to do a search on this forum, it just goes away forever... Likewise, apologies if I'm missing something obvious from the game manual. As the game is backordered, I'm still playing the demo. Anyway... Has anyone else encountered LOS ass-pains? While playing village of (mumble), I wanted to get a mortar unit into position where it could both smoke (somebody) and then lay down HE on (somebody else) next turn. After the unit was in position, I went to use the smoke, and, "vision blocked". The line was red right from the position of my unit. Turns out, his vision was blocked by the terrain --he was sitting near the edge of a tile with a barely perceptible "bevel" to the next terrain tile. To get LOS I had to move the unit, oh, one "man length" forward, and then he could see. But that wasted a turn for that mortar. What, are these guys eyeballs in their toes? The unit's location was "tall pines", but I did move him to a spot where there were no actual trees blocking his sight, as evidenced by the fact that the problem was solved by inching him forward that tiny amount. Is there a way to determine what a given units LOS will be when he gets to a certain location? Am I doing something stupid, or missing something obvious? Anyone else had this happen? erl
