  1. I have played just about every RTS game that has been out, and the past year I got burnout on the hectic feed troops to the masses.

And he who builds first and most wins, regardless of tactics.

The first turn-based strategy game I played was this year and that was HOMM3.

I found the slower, more thoughtfull pace actually more tactical than most RTS games.

I find the WEGO actually more tense than any RTS game, teh 60 second run, and you can't do anything, it all comes down to how you planned your move before.

This causes me way more tension, than any RTS game I have played, you live with your mistake, you can't act on your decision immediately.

Most RTS games you just lick your wounds and build twice as many units, troops, etc.

And throw them at the enemy.

I still enjoy a few RTS games, mainly AOK, just bought Jagged Alliance 2, looks like a good turn-based tactical squad game.

I think CM is the perfect blend of planning and action and thinking, things many newer RTS games lack, IMO.

  2. Hello, everything was fine I had some mods installed and the v105 patch, meanwhile I had a non game related Hard Drive crash.

I thought I had everything in Combat Mission backed up, but now I know I didn't.

I re-installed the game with no mods and patched to v105, but now in both Quick Battles and Scenerios I have no enemy, in this case Germans.

The info box on bottom of screen lists no morale or victory % for enemy.

I tried everything, I am afraid that I am missing a file, have un-installed and re-installed 3 times to no avail.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Totally bums me, my favorite game, the crash was enough hassle now can't play CM.

    Thanks

  3. I have been mainly playing Quick Battles, to learn the game better, since I have more control of the battle setup.

I have played some mod scenerios which were great, keep up the good work.

When I have the time I really want to play a Campain, also when I know how to play better.

I think I get over whelmed at the number of scenerios, yet I keep downloading more, and can't stop. smile.gif

Which do you play the most of?

  4. I use the colored bases, and left click on each unit to double check their orders, before "go".

I rarely miss anyone, although I always seem to forget about one of my 50cal men, cause they are so slow.

The colored bases work well, but kind of take away from the realism.

I just try to be very methodical in keeping track of everyone, and double, triple check their orders.

  5. You also have to remember that in combat the old adrenaline pump is working overtime.

People are capable of amazing things when bullets are flying and the adrenaline starts pumping.

Many in combat go along time without food or sleep, and even carry on with wounds, that outside of combat would put anyone down, smile.gif

  6. I got hooked on the damn show after about the 3rd episode, just plain mindless fun entertainment, like most tv.

I really thought Rudy would win, if the show really was about survial, out in the boonies, then he would be the one I would pick to win.

Have to figure at his age, when he was a SEAL it was alot tougher then, than now the guy is hardcore, and funny.

  7. People I have talked to said it is VERY hard, there are 100's of units fighting and it gets overly chaotic.

The screenshots look good for a 2D game, but I think it is going to be way to hectic for me, at 51 my RTS gaming days are close to ending. smile.gifOne preview even wondered how anyone could control up to 1000 units on the screen! This is what the developer said, that many units.

CM would be very very hard to beat, its better than any RTS game and TB game I have played.

  8. King Tiger22, what I find that interests me in a game and what others do, can be different.

I don't think wanting to "relate" to one side is ridiculous. Since members of my family served in the Western front, and as a kid watching war movies where about this area, it simply interests me more, and I can relate to it more.

I get more enjoyment out of a game whether it is a wargame, RPG or football, when I can at least identify with one side or the other.

I am sure that most casual non-wargamers will agree.

This is not to say I won't enjoy CM2, but that I won't enjoy it as much as CM1 because of the subject matter.

I think the majority of the public knows about the Pacific and Western Front in WW2, but very little about the Eastern Front, me included.

So sue me, I like to relate to one side or the other in all games. smile.gif

    To each his own.

  9. It is a given that if I play the game I have to "side" with one or the other.

It is true that alot of German and Russian troops hated their supreme commanders, Hitler and Stalin.

Just as many troops today hate Clinton.

Like I mentioned, I do not read any WW2 material, and this is the first "wargame" I have played. I am a much more casual gamer then most of you, so please understand my feelings about chosing sides.

I will most likely side with the Russians, Stalin unlike Hitler,at least didn't try to overtake the free world, not that he wouldn't want to. smile.gif

To me CM is a very, very great, enjoyable game, but I know very little about WW2, and next to none about most of the major players involved.

    How about a Nam CM4? smile.gif

  10. Not being a wargamer in the strict sense, the Western Front interests me because I know much more about it and can relate to it, since my father and uncle fought there.

I have a side that I want to play (American), where as the Eastern Front althought much bigger in scope, doesn't have the same personal interest for me.

I am sure I will buy it and play it, but not with the same gut feelings against the enemy as in CM1.

On one hand you have the Germans and Hitler, and on the other Stalin and the Russians, a fairly hard choice for me, since neither Hitler or Stalin are men to admire as is Patton, Marshall, Eishenhower, Churchill, etc.

This is my dilemma with the Eastern front, any game I play I have to relate to one side or the other, usually the "good" guy.

Much like watching a Football game where I don't like either team, pretty hard to get into.

These are just my thoughts, coming from a casual wargamer. smile.gif

  11. Good idea, to put them in half track.

I also noticed when playing that the halftrak mortars seemed very ineffective.

Buy the time you got them sighted on a target, they would get snuffed.

Next game I'll just get a HT and mortar crew.

  12. Theres quite a few ways you can make the AI harder, especialy in random map Quick Battles.

I always say it is better to have a weaker ai than a very tough one, simply because you can always find ways to make it harder to play against.

But finding ways to make it easier is alot harder to do.

Play some quick battles with the enemy having more troops and experience, this should toughen it up. smile.gif
