  1. Holdit,

Tried to look at your Small Norman Village, but it came back with "Fatal Error."

    Regards,

    John Kettler

    Hi John,

I've just downloaded the file from the repository and it loaded fine for me. Did you try loading it more than once or downloading the file again?

In any case, I've made a view changes and uploaded version 1.3, which should be available sometime tomorrow, I should imagine.

Thanks for your interest and hope it works for you next time.

  2. Well, my version control was OK, just my ability with the scenario editor let me down. I set objectives alright, just one each and covering the same area: the village. What I forgot to do was add labels and point values. I've done that now and uploaded the corrected file (v 1.3). From experience, it should take about a day to be approved and made available for download.

    Some other changes:

    - Added some landmarks

    - Removed a badly-placed roadside sign

    - Added one or two openings in the bocage in the Axis setup zone.

Apologies for any inconvenience, and thanks for the feedback.

  3. I took a break from Hougoumont to try to put together a serious map. The result is here; http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=314&func=fileinfo&id=2133

It's what you might call an "intimate" setting, not even a square kilometre in size, but with lots of little details and, I think, interesting scenery, giving plenty of options for attacker and defender. The village is in the northern half of the map, surrounded by gently rolling bocage country and with some small farms, orchards, etc.

It's set up for QB with setup zones and 4 x AI plans for both attacker and defender (version 1.2 which has been submitted but may not be published yet). The Axis player is the attacker and attacks from the south.

I would be interested to hear feedback from anyone who happens to take a look at it.

  4. Hougoumont - although I won't stake money on it. I think the barn on the left should be larger...

Hougoumont it is, and you're right about that building. I think I'll close that gap where the south gate was too. There are a few more details to tidy up - mostly elevations.

I wanted to do a Waterloo map but the size limits won't let me cover the area I want covered. I might do it anyway, keeping the main features but reducing the distances between them, which would probably make it more suitable for WW2 at the same time.

For CMBO I also did Quatre Bras, Borodino, Agincourt and Stalingrad. I might redo the first three for CMBN with some modifications to aid WW2 suitability.

Do scenario designers look for pre-made maps or do they tend to do create their own?

Also look under MikeyD for my 1/2 Res terrain doodads: bushes, grass, wheat, etc. They look just like the others (especially if you computer's down-rezing the game) and I've found they're often just enough to keep the mac from down-resing that last fatal step.

I've downloaded your doodads and Captain Wacky's low-res terrain and the game seems a lot more playable now.

Many thanks for the help! Thanks also to illo for the DIY tip.

    Dear Thin Red Line,

I think players like to try their hand at familiar maps/battles, regardless of the age in which they were fought. Even if it means having armor on the Waterloo battlefield.

    Just an observation....... Toad

    Louie,

Where you the author ? I hope you didn't misunderstood me, when i said very interesting, it was not ironic at all. I found the map really good, i spend time studying them, not playing though, just imagining the cuirassiers brigades assaultings the russian or english strongpoints, the lightning of hundreds of bayonettes, the roar of the 12pdrs batteries, and wishing there was a Napoleonic CM...

Especially they looked relatively small to me, knowing the number of men who fought there. Men density was probably extraodinary on those battlefields.

    An excellent work. </font>

There are a couple of games out there that almost make it............but not quite. The best ones that I have played were Talonsoft's 'battleground series' but they are looking very dated now, and after a while it gets really boring fighting the same battle over and over and over again.

In case you were unaware, at www.nir-project.com you can download maps for umpteen different Napoleonic battles. I have Austerlitz, Eylau, Auersdtaedt, Marengo and Montebello so far, and I'm just scratching the surface. I play them with the AH Napoleon's Battle tabeltop rules instead of the BGW engine, though.

Well of course CM doesn't apply to close order drill, though I suspect the more proper term would be linear warfare. If beleive I've made the point that the engine as it stands would either need serious changes or would not be useful at all.

Unit & combat aspects apart, I think the map/terrain system is just about perfect already (apart from needing larger size limits, perhaps).

The plan is that all patches will be released by us for all versions at the same time, so youd not be at CDV's mercy with regards to the quality and timing of the patch.

Not saying you shouldnt get yourself a US copy, thats up to you. smile.gif I just wanted to make sure you were making an informed descision.

    Dan

Thanks for taking the time to make that clarification, Dan. I'll still get the US one, because it's going to involve sending dollars to the US one way or the other.

I asked about the Patching issue on Cmbb forum some weeks back and was advised by BFC blokes that any patches released would work for all versions of the game.

Having said that I found it hard to trust CDV no matter what they told BFC and have obtained the US version via US mate. Bit more expensive method but I think in long run more satisfying

    Cheers

    Hi Gary,

Hope you're getting better weather up there than we're getting down here. :( You're right, I didn't "hold it" for very long (groan). Good self-control - even if I say so myself! I agree with you on the trust issue, and the additional wait and extra effort required to get it from the US will be worth it, I think.

    All the best,

    Paul

  12. Short version: I need a US forum member to accept and forward two copies of CMBB to the Republic of Ireland. The rest of this yarn is mere background and optional reading!

Long version: Dublin, yesterday: I popped in to see if it had arrived, but there was no sign of it on the shelves. At this point in the story of CMBB's European release, I was hardly surprised. But I persevered. "Any sign of Combat Mission 2* coming in?", I asked the sales floor chap, who informed me that they had a few copies down in the storeroom. "That'll guarantee bumper sales", I thought. So much for bringing CM to the masses. To be fair, though, the delivery had only arrived the day before and they hadn't had time to do what ever it is they need to do before putting it up on the shelves.

Helpful fellow that he was, he fetched me a copy and told me the price. Then I realised that this wasn't what I wanted at all - having previously decided to get it from the US (probably). Decision time! Aaaaarghh!!!

But I put it back, even though it wasn't easy to do. The reason? Not the Waffletruppen thing - that doesn't really bother me. Mainly it's the potential for problems with patches. Since a CM patch is effectively a replacement exe. A CDV CM installation patched with a US exe is going to look for a US CD. I know this already because when CMBO eventually hit the shops, I bought it too - mainly for the mods CD but so I would also have a backup CD. I tried using it not too long ago but it wouldn't recognise it. So I'd be left with trusting CDV to issue patches promptly - I don't think so.

I also reasoned that to get the manual I would have to organise payment to the US. But then, if I'm sending money to the US anyway, I might as well be sending it for the real thing. Not to mention the problem I have with my hard-earned going to support a company that gives me a substandard package for the full price and denies me the right to make a backup copy. And that's when I put it back. (See short version above for punchline). Like I said, a difficult thing to do, which is why I'm posting this now in case I weaken and run in and buy it on Monday!

So, if anyone can help, my e-mail address is in my profile.

    Thanks in advance etc.

I never realised it was so important to get it into retail. You'd never have thought it from the manifesto. Whatever happened to the wargaming revolution? It seems that for European customers at least, it only lasted for one game. Now we get CM in a shop (eventually/hopefully/TBA), just like all the other games; it comes with unduly restrictive copy protection, just like all the other games; and you don't get a proper manual*, just like all the other games. All that's left that makes CM so special is the game itself and this forum.

*That's not ignoring BTS's admirable workaround regarding the "CDV manualette", for which they should be congratulated and serve as an example to others in the industry.
