  1. I wondered about the "88 mm rooster tails" of dust --what has been said makes sense thanks -- also just think these would --I guess- have been the flak 18 or basically the L 56 of the Tiger I-- not the much faster L71 or pak 43 which should really raise a dust tail-- I won't tell how Seige turns out-- another good book imho-- is Rock of Anzio -- I have read it several times and will again as CMAK approaches--

  2. Army at Dawn by Rick Atchley is about the the US in the Tunsian campaign-- good read lots info on the in -fighting and how hard the real fighting was. Lots of good ideas here for the gamer-- the other is Seige A novel of the Eastern Front 1942-- Russ Schneider --very grim but a good read and good for gamers. After reading about the Tunisa stuff I am even more looking forward to the up coming CMAKO One thing though -- I really miss the tracers-- in one section of the Army at DAwn -- a GI told of there being so many green German tracers in the air that you could read book by them:0- also most main tank gun used a tracer element anyway -- I can play with out them but I miss them --if any one gets a chance the books are worth a look

  3. I have played this game three times now -- first as the Germans -- it was a no contest for them- and that is no surprize-- then as the Russains and the Ai killed me -- so after studying and reading the above AAr -- I tried again- it ended with the Russians 54 the Germans 47 not overwhelming but I learned and enjoyed and that is what the game is for- thanks for the info-- I will probably try again in the future --if it were not so long I know I would but it is long my game went 49 turns

  4. well I finished this battle last night-- I sorta lost by just a little-but it was fun now for a litle AAR warning this has a spoilers in the following..

.ok stayed with the designer setup as to unit placment -- the left arm of the three pronged attack was lost to flanking fire except for 4 HTs

the far right and the center did fine and advanced to the second flag of the town - I did not bother with assualting building much --usually I just blew them down--the two Panthers were the real saviour of the fight--but I lost them when as they were advancing on the second town flag a fleeing Russian infantry man ran behind them -- just one mind you --they both traversed their turrets to 6.00 and both were then lost -I hate that when that happens --after that my left over 3's and 4's had too much trouble with the remaining armor in the short few turns I had left. but it was fun and I will play agian -- as to the Panthers you might give a platoon instead of just two maybe some arty to the Axis but overall it was good

  5. Hay WHite Phosphorus-- the book is the first of two volumes dealing with Kursk and Kursk only -- lots of pictures and descent text--good book This one is about the southern fighting- I see there is a lot of discussion about this battle still -- I like it because of near Parity I can use Arty-Air- Armor as well as troops- How ever one classes it the Germany did not succeed and could never have --they were famous for local or tactical wins but could not win on the strategic level on the eastern front- even if they had encircled could they have held - could they have then wiped out the encirclement- anyway the answer is they did not for what ever the reason truly win-- good book, good to have and good for our game CMBB

  6. I have a number of books about Kursk and a number that include Kursk. The new one from Jean Restyn is really good- many pictures and text--He makes this comment at the end of the book, that from creation in the factory to its use on the front --the average life for a t-34 was 7 days! MY question is while Kursk is my favorite battle-- as the books become newer are we writing history or revising history- The battle of Prokhorovk is now with smaller groups of armor and not the dusty massive engagement it has been portrayed. The Russians do not really win and the Germans really quit and the losses for the Germans were not as bad but were very bad for the Rusians-I realize that the end result is still the Germans did not have any more successful summer attacks and the Russians could and did win in something else than winter - but are we now getting the right of the historical event? Restyn book is still good --I guess there is no real way to completely know--This book as number of pictures of Russian armor being hit and for us and CMBB and almost endless look at this for us to try to recreate--for those who want to

  7. Went through my first Axis vs AI battle in play testing this-- hard -- IL2s are real killers most of the village is gone and I am only at turn 21 of 45-first wave of mostly armor was mostly knocked out --second wave had more troops got hit hard and is bogged down _ I am having fun will now start tweeking---not so sure how it will play on a slower machine -it takes about 2-3 minutes per turn -still fun

  8. I will read and see if I can get any more info-- i learned they grew apples there too- it is described as a straggling long village-- yes after they captured hill 251 anyway the rest of the fight was in the village which was destroyed-- I have Ballentine book on Kursk-- Robin on Kursk Glantz x 2-- the Ospry- Barber on Kursk and Carrell Scorched Earth and Images of Kursk this last one has a chapter called "Slaughter at Ponyri" but not really a lot of pictures etc I would like to see what you do I am working a map now and have been picking units --I may have gotten carried away as the points total was about 18000-- I can not play Trey's (good as it is) even my 1.5 gig P4 does not do well with it-- i have learned it is easier to over load with CMBB than CMBO more graphic stuff I guess anyway stay in touch i would like to see how it goes and compare to mine --if your is better --I will quit and use yours smile.gif

  9. hi Elmo _ I too have been working on htis battle and came to the same basic conclusion of makeing it smaller and usable - I have 6 or 7 books on Kursk as sources-- if you have Oespry's book on the battle there is an over view map of the battle area that would be easy to copy -- I have not decided yet jsut how I am going to make this -- if I can help you let meknow and I look forward to yours-- hay we ought to play each other:)

  10. You are right the exit zones did not help much -- I will come back to it later and try again-- I have this battle mentioned in Gotterdamerung as well as Tigers in combat but I will have to look and see which one-- (1 or 2) I also have Tigers on the Eastern Front I will look there -- I made my own version but still had the same problem the AI moves slowly when at all-- sad -I guess I will have to try a human -- smile.gif I have never done any pbem etc but I really like this game and I will likely do so soon. I will look in the next day or so and post what I find here-- it is supposedly historical

  11. I have played this a bunch of times from both sides -- AI defend is best and that is no surprize-- but here is what I have tried-- first I put tank hunters hidden in the city and it really changed things---I then added an exit zone with a little effect -- next I will try a line of flags to try to lead the AI throuhg on atack just be sure to turn off the flags so it will look better to us. In the real battle -- there was infantry as well as paks and tanks -- also the village was destroyed in the fighting- haveing the infantry in the buildings helps it makes for destruction of buildings and as the armor fights them it changes how they deal with the other armor-- the 424th as has been stated was wiped out in this fight -- Does any one else but memodify and play with the cd battles?
