  1. Slightly off topic, but I've been notified by the folks upstairs that "Madmatt" here at Battlefront could be confused for my moniker. I reregistered for a new Username, but without success. I figure that info is locked in a cookie and would like to get rid of it. Any help? ------------------ MaddMatt/Crimguy CO, VMFA-323 Death Rattlers www.deathrattlers.webme.net/homepage.html
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by grunto: Don't the Chinese count the day of conception as the birthdate so perhaps they should have used those born in 10-1926 through 9-1927? -SNIP- <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Andy, You're right about the Birthdate being that of conception in Eastern countries. To give an amusing slant on astrology (I don't believe a bit of it - so be warned), here's a little tale a friend of mine told me: He took a course on Western Thought at Georgetown University (could have been American I don't recall). The professor did a couple days on the fringe topics, including astrology, and had the entire class fill out a bio sheet that included, among other things, birthdate, place of birth, time of birth, etc. Everyone handed in their results, and the professor promised to get their horoscopes done by a professional. Two weeks later he gave everyone their results, and asked them to rate their horoscope's accuracy on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being "right on the money." A couple gave the horoscopes a 5, twenty people gave it a 4, 15 people gave it a 3, 4 people gave it a 2, and a couple people gave it a 1 (probably overly cynical bastards!). The professor then instructed everyone to pass their horoscope back one row, the person in the back giving their copy to the person in the front row in typical scholastic fashion. Guess what? Well, they were all identical. The professor, an unapologetically cheap man, only got his horoscope drafted and photocopied the results. The lesson is simple: Using the wonderfully vague language prevelant, indeed necessary, in horoscopes provides the creator with the ability to tell anyone some kind of half-truth about themselves. And this isn't surprising, considering 1) we all come from the same species, and have the same traits as a race; and 2) being the same animal, we have the same needs, and one of those needs is fulfilled when we hear what we want to hear. ------------------ MaddMatt/Crimguy CO, VMFA-323 Death Rattlers www.deathrattlers.webme.net/homepage.html [This message has been edited by maddmatt (edited 08-14-2000).]
  3. Consider it done. I'm very proud of my hair, and would shudder if anyone ever thought I had lost it at the tender age of 30. Even if it was by accident. The megalomaniacal part is all me in spades, though ------------------ MaddMatt/Crimguy CO, VMFA-323 Death Rattlers www.deathrattlers.webme.net/homepage.html
  4. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Seanachai: Umm, sorry, but what's with the handle? Was Bigg Timee Sofftwarre already taken? I would advocate distinguishing yourself as an individual, rather than playing on a Forum stalwart. Forgive me, please, if this is the veriest of coincidences... <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> After looking around here a bit, I have noticed a man going by Madmatt. Just a coincidence, actually. Certainly not trying to imitate him. I've been going by Maddmatt for some time now (5 years? sheesh, I'm getting old!), as it was my screen name back on AOL, and continued until I couldn't use it to sign onto Jane's Combat Net. So, in most circles I'm maddmatt, and in flight sims, I'm Crimguy, the CO of the venerable VMFA-323 Death Rattlers. Madmatt, if you're out there, I guess we'll have to work something out!! If it causes too much confusion around here, I'll be happy to change handles. Especially since I plan on buying this sucker after playing the demo 3 times now!!! One more question though: is this game what was going to become TacOps 3D? Thanks for all the feedback everyone. After playing the demo, I can't believe I actually plunked $30 on Shogun, since I know that once this game arrives Shogun will just be a giant black hole on my hard drive. ------------------ MaddMatt/Crimguy CO, VMFA-323 Death Rattlers www.deathrattlers.webme.net/homepage.html
  5. I'm curious since in many ways the two games play in a similar fashion. I played TacOps for about 2 years (1995-97), and still tell people it's the best modern military game out there. I haven't plunked the money down for CM yet, since I only discovered it about a week ago and most of my time has been flying my virtual F-18, but I absolutely loved the demo, and am starting to have those all-too-familiar dreams about battlefield glory. I'd love to hear your comments/comparisons on CM, and what you think I'll like/dislike about this game. I keep hearing about the AI being a little weak, and would like to know more. I also keep hearing accolades, both from players and reviewers, that this could be the best computer wargame in a very long time. I'm sure I'll buy it soon anyway. I'd just like to know what I'm gettting into. Thanks, Matt ------------------ MaddMatt/Crimguy CO, VMFA-323 Death Rattlers www.deathrattlers.webme.net/homepage.html
  6. I agree with all the last person wrote, and think I would stress the part about "defending in depth." You must not simply set up a wall. Set up choke points, followed by points the troops can retreat to to do another ambush. Have troops set back to do the same. Keep a highly mobile reserve that can plug holes and strike at the enemy where they falter or expose themselves. Have AT guns hold their fire until the tanks roll past, if possible. Often the best defense is one that chips away at the oncoming enemy, until it gets to that crucial moment when the initiative swings in your favor. It's a cheesy analogy, but its the equivilent of playing the black pieces in chess. Having a one move disadvantage, you must recognize the point at which white has lost a tempo or moved into a bad position, and at that time you must seize the game from him. ------------------ MaddMatt/Crimguy CO, VMFA-323 Death Rattlers www.deathrattlers.webme.net/homepage.html
