  1. CAS is spectacular when they hit you, but you rarely notice what it does for you - sometimes you see a tank gone, but in many cases you just wonder "why'd he drop his bombs there" and on the AAR screen see the two AT guns that never bothered you in the game for some reason ;)

  2. I don't know what you're getting wound up over. I payed 34 Euros for the version ordered online from Battlefront, including shipping - amazon.de had it listed at 35, shipping on Dec. 31st. Guess what I ordered.

Oh, and if you already ordered two weeks ago, you should have the game right now ...

  3. Trommelfeuer, you are under a misconception. When you quote "They were used in support of the infantry" that in no way implies indirect fire. The Sturmgeschütz was the successor to the light artillery in WW1, which employed infantry guns in a direct fire role. Obviously, that approach had shortcomings, and putting said IG on a chassis solved those problems.

Principally, StuGs were able of indirect fire, but rarely used in that role. I recall one mention somewhere where Panzer IV (short) were used in an artillery role (they also had special equipment for that), too, but it was uncommon to say the least. The traditional role of the StuG was infantry support, hang back while the infantry attacks, and when they run into a MG nest or bunker or something else that gives them trouble, bring forward the StuG and get it over with smile.gif

Also, yes, StuG crews were artillerymen, not just early in the war, but there's no rule that artillerymen may not fire on a target they can see ;)

  4. One thing you also have to consider is the refining process, which creates from crude oil a rather fixed ratio of gas to diesel. IIRC for the US army, gas was used because the Navy used most of the Diesel fuel.

That today is less of an issue, most tanks these days can burn both fuels and jet fuel on top of that.

  5. This is not a bug, it's a good position. Tank guns have rather flat trajectories, so they are rather unsuited to hitting a target behind a slight rise, as there is a dead zone behind the crest, and it is the larger, the higher the MV of the gun. a short support gun is better against positions like that than a fast at gun.

From Panzer Leader, describing the action of one Obergefreiter Maurer:

"In looking for a suitable spot Maurer had strayed too far to the left and virtually lost touch with his company. But he had found an ideal position on a commanding hill and knew what he had to do.

Suddenly he saw in the valley below him an enemy columnmarching south. [...] When the enemy had come close enough, Maurer opened fire on the column, which at once stopped. The men jumped out of their vehicles and took cover. Maurer saw the wounded collapse. With the help of his ammunition bearer he fired one belt after the other from his MG. The first truck caught fire, the confusion was complete. Then came the first reaction: anti-tank guns and light artillery were brought into position and opened fire.

Maurer laughed. 'There's no way they can hit us from that angle, come on, let's have another belt.' The shots did indeed whistle over his head."

Maurer got the Knights Cross for that action, much to his surprise.

  6. A very nasty way of using them is by deploying your first line on the edge of a wood with fallbacks behind (out of sight from everywhere except inside the wood). First you make the enemy approach that first line, which usually costs him some. Then you withdraw deeper into the wood and have a prepared position in there as well. Works especially well with infantry with lots of close-quarter firepower.

  7. Actually, a '41 german infantry squad comes with 20 Fausts (correct plural is Fäuste, btw). Don't think they're listed in the unit window, however, and I doubt they were of much use against armor. Still, they were kept in service until the end of the war and could provide some much-needed punch in close combat situations. BTW, I think the number of Fausts per squad was reduced to 18 when they reorganized squads down to 9 memebers, anyone have any data on this?

  8. Just like advance, but in reverse with a small morale bonus and (reduced amount of) fire going out the other way? Always has been my biggest gripe with CMBO and now BB that you can't effectively get infantry out of a position that has become compromised without having them turn their back to the enemy, run like italians and getting routed on the way back.

(Oh, search didn't turn up anything ;) )
