Sorry - but am I missing something in this thread?

Does The Commissar own a copy of CM, or is he simply playing the demo?

If he is just playing with the free demo, how is he justified in writing such demanding messages?

That was a good suggestion! Thanks! I didn't know that switching to "Simple Finder" would turn off Contextual Menus in the Finder.

    I am also using a G3 with OS 9.04.

Unfortunately, the Contextual Menu still pops up when I try to Control-click in CM. It could be because I have added some Contextual Menu modules to my set - the extra ones are the options that appear in CM.

BTS just chose the wrong key! smile.gif Any other key except "Control" would work fine!

  3. In the past, I have also raised the question about Contextual Menus.

Control-clicking is how CM enables you jump quickly around a map.

Unfortunately, it's also the key-combination for Contextual Menus.

So, with Contextual Menus turned on, you can't use the control-click feature of CM to move around the map.

It would be great if a different key - such as Shift, Option, or Command - could be used in CM.

  4. I have an idea to help improve PBEM exchanges.

Often, a PBEM file is simply 60 seconds of movie. As soon as you're finished watching it, it's time to send your reply back your opponent.

Sometimes, however, you also need to plan your turn moves before sending the file back.

I have developed the habit of using the fast-forward button to race through PBEM movies, just to learn if it ends with an immediate return send, or if I need to enter my next moves. There's no point in making my opponent needlessly wait for my reply, if there's nothing for me to add. I can watch the movie as much as I like, planning my next moves while my opponent starts working on the next turn.

Of course, after I race through the movie, I always have to re-load the file to watch the movie properly. Either right after sending an immediate reply to my opponent, or because I need to see it and then enter my next moves.

It would be nice if CM could tell you in advance if all you need to do is watch the movie and reply, or if this is a enter-your-moves round.

    Hi,

Need some clarity here. What is the big deal about TCP/IP? This game is not real-time. If you want to play the game against a human opponent quickly, just do what I do:

I agree with TankDawg. I don't see the big deal with live network play in an turn-based game like Combat Mission.

You have to wait for your opponent to finish his moves, and he has to wait for you. What's the difference if you're connected live to each other, or if you're exchanging turns via e-mail?

Maybe I can see value if both opponents will be able to plot their orders simutaneously and watch the resulting movie at the same time. But one of the players will always finish his moves before the other and need to wait. And the movie contains a wealth of information that often needs to be re-played over different views of the battlefield. You need way more time than 60 seconds to learn everything you need from it. More waiting for the other guy. (Or him waiting for you.)

Where's the fun or value in keeping an Internet connection going with the other side just to wait and wait? ...

I say just sent 'em an e-mail then get up go have a sandwich ... smile.gif

  6. This happened to my brother while playing the game, too.

It sounds frustrating as Hell, but it's not unbelievable. I imagine that something as continually stressed as a tank's suspension could break at any time. The chain of my bike has come un-cogged while riding a perfectly good road. I'm sure the same can happen to tank treads.

Personally, if I were a tanker, I would be nervous about ever locking one track to rotate my tank. The idea of twisting the suspension with several dozen tons and a few hundred horsepower just pleads for trouble - in my opinion. Doing that on a dry road would be even worse than in grass or dirt!

The same thing applies to heavier weapons, such as tanks. If they fire, say, every five seconds, they'll fire on the same second.

I don't think CM events follow such a measurable timing.

I played a game of Chance Encounter in which my STuG was knocked out *after* destroying the opposing Sherman.

I watched the movie very closely. My STuG fired. The Sherman then fired just a hair before the StuG's shell hit. The Sherman's shot knocked out my STuG - but the Sherman was dead by the time it arrived.

  8. I am genuinely interested in hearing from anyone who can describe how WWII era tankers hit moving targets.

I have target-shooting experience, and I know how to "lead" a shot in front of a moving target to fire at where the target is about is to be.

But how do you do this in a tank? Do you aim the gun well ahead of your target, and wait for the right moment? Could you actually traverse the turret to match the speed of your target?

And how *do* you aim a tank gun from inside a blind box, anyway?

I would be very interested in hearing about the way WWII tanks aimed their guns and how they fired on moving targets.

    Thanks!

  10. Are there any plans to add a "Save Movie" feature?

I, for one, would like to have this. It would be invaluable for sharing stories and tactics in this forum, as well as for bragging purposes. smile.gif

I have tried re-playing the auto-save files, but the combat results turn out differently each time.

Obviously, the ability to export movie information is present for PBEM. Can this ability be enhanced to save movie data on-demand?

For comparision, the Myth series games save your entire game as a movie, allowing you to save and watch it from start to finish.

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this: In a couple PBEM games, using my Mac against PC users, I've seen an odd flickering of ATV sound contacts all over the board...this is differnt from what the game usually does, at least in my experience. And it's very distraction. Unless it's some odd manifestation of "Oh my God, they're everywhere!" But I don't think so. Has anyone else seen this? Charles?

    Hi Buckeye,

The CM manual talks about this on page 81.

Sound contacts aren't definite. All that your troops can tell you is, "I think I hear something over there."

I played a game where my troops were convinced they were being fired on by a Tiger. The graphics for the tank were drawn in all their complete Tiger glory. Half-way through the game, I got close enough to see that it wasn't a Tiger after all - and the graphics for the tank changed before my eyes.

I see that on my Macs too.

I think that it less of a "problem" and more of BTS just having some fun. The joke is quite clever, if you're a Mac user from the days of black & white monitors. wink.gif

Does anyone know how to get this card to work, or if it is even possbible to get it to work?

BTW i have 160 meg of ram, if that's important.

    Hi Bill,

I recommend leaving your computer alone, if the problem only happens with that one saved file. If you try to make adjustments, you will likely just introduce more problems.

However, if it happens again, I would post the problem, along with a basic report from the Apple System Profiler. (Apple Menu)
