I believe the mission is being sponsored by NIMA (the National Imagery & Mapping Agency, formerly the Defense Mapping Agency). Sampling rate was to be approximately 1 point every 30 meters IIRC, which I believe is the resolution of DTED-2 (this mission might be intended to finish up global coverage at DTED-2 resolution, actually; I read an interview with the head of NIMA (I think that was who it was) which stated that the high-resolution data would be classified but lower-resolution data (possibly 100m sampling interval) would be available (through USGS would be my guess).
...I just checked and sure enough the NIMA web page (www.nima.mil) talks about SRTM and DTED data.
