  1. I have to agree with Michael about the patch. What is it you people want patched? This product is the least buggy piece of code I have shelled cash out for in years. Are any of you suffering crashes? All the glitches I've read about so far are completely inconsequential. I would much rather see Steve and Charles spend their time doing the coding and textures for CM2 than on any silly patch for CM. Further more, what I think people here are mostly looking forward to in the patch is not really any "patching", of the game but more of the "enhancing" that BTS did with the 1.01 patch. Am I wrong? Are you really worried that something isn't modelled correctly, or that the program is buggy? Or are you eagerly awaiting that next new little tid-bit of a surprise from Charles' gracious fingertips? I'm not trying to come down on anybody, I want it too, but...patience is a virtue.

  2. I still have to come down on the "I think it's fine the way it is" side of the fence. As a former tanker, I know for a fact we were always ready to keep fighting if we lost a tank...those of us who were left...

If it's only sidearms and perhaps one SMG that a crew has after dismounting I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect them to continue an attack. I think however, BTS's theory of "Bail-time" is a good one. When a tank gets knocked out and is about to brew up, NOBODY is going to stick around inside the thing to unlimber an MG or an SMG cliped to the wall. Despite this, we always had our trusty 1911A1's in shoulder holsters. "IF" the crew is modeled as only having sidearms, as I think it currently is, then what the hell is the problem? Gamey? My ass. I can't speak for my esteemed compadres in the US Army, or any foreign service, but in the Marines, "Every Marine A Rifleman" means EXACTLY what it says.

  3. Yeah that one sounded touchy to me as well. "Here Ed, Let me pry up this flagstone and you put that APERS mine under it...there ya go, now I'll just put this rock back like so and...***BOOM***

As to All or nothing, Other than the designated engagement range issue of "A", I found this one of the most challenging and consequently most rewarding scenario I have yet played. It was rife with frustrations indeed, but man, when it was over did it seem an accomplishement. I only regret that having played it, I can't play it again (the old against the AI a second time deal).

Keep trying ASL Vet, You'll have decimating victorys as well...

  4. I have been beat before. In a quick battle, I played the axis and with full defaults and was given a force of about two infantry platoons and some MG's with about 7 Sdkfz251/1 halftracks. Then came the shermans and mortars...It sucked. I was really disappointed in the force the AI assigned to me. However, I suppose a lot of commanders say that about their higher ups, and so I fought on and got creamed.

  5. My father fought in the Second World War and has nothing but praise and good things to say about the Austrailian men who boldly went to war in N. Africa and fought with great elan, esprit and courage. More importantly, he is ever grateful for their leaving all those beautiful Austrailian women home and lonely for him and the rest of the 1st Marine Division to sweep down in after Guadalcanal. My Father still gets a sparkle in his eye when he recalls Australia and all the "Shelia's"...My mother hates all mention of Australia... smile.gif

  6. I just finished a totally default quick battle, of the 500 point size, and it was one of the funnest battles I've fought yet. I have been making and playing 2000-3000 point battles mostly, using the editor, or 1000 point quick battles. Yet recently I made a ultra-tiny little scenario to test a discussion thread here involving close assaults on open topped vehicles, just one M-36 vs. a platoon of Infantry. It was so fun, that I have since played alot of "Micro" battles. They really do seem to be where this game shines brightest, under 500 points. I think I see why BTS assigned that as the default. I think the imersion is much more pronounced and you identify with the units more. Once a battle gets up around 2500 points or so, there is too much to do to really focus on ONE specific unit for too long.

Great game. Fantastic game. Thanks again BTS. Can I send you more money?

  7. It's my understanding that "they" are going to "Titanicify" Pearl Harbor. That is make a cool movie and RUIN IT with some sniveling chick-flick love story all entwined within it to add more appeal to the other 50% who pay to see movies.

I loved Titanic. Every part except the insignificant plot line involving that one guy and that dizzy rich chick...The rest was great!

Heaven help us, not another Fighter-pilot- falls-in-love-with-a-nurse-who-loves-some-other-dogface-while-the-Nips-are-attacking movie. Just what we need. Hopefully the CG will be cool enough to make up for it. I can never see too many Zekes in the sky at one time.

  8. Yeah, I dread what's going to happen to Lord of the Rings. They have Liv Taylor as a sword swinging Elvish princess for Christ's sake!

Starship Troopers remains one of my favorite all time books, and I think Heinlein's political view of the future is just great! I don't see it as too fascistic, more a return to the morality and responsibilites we had around in the very early 20th century, say Teddy Roosevelt o'clock. Civic responsibility? Raise your kids right? Maybe I'm a fascist...

It was said the game will be more like the book, but without drop capsules? I still think one of the great parts of the book was when he entered his capsule and waited like a link in an MG to be shot out into planetfall. What a great book! I remember re-reading it in the airport on the way down to MCRD San Diego for fruitcamp...getting psyched...

    Sgt. Zim, where are you?

  9. I just played a new scenario I am making twice last night, and in both games the U.S. Company HQ unit killed a King Tiger with Grenades. Sad to say, in both games, it was my LAST King Tiger as well. Both attacks resulted in the unhurt crew abandoning the tank. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but it was enough to raise eyebrows. This game has caused me to hurl a lot of words my old drill instructors would have been proud of at my computer monitor.

  10. I just set up a test scenario with one MG pillbox and a couple of HMG guys covering a wheat field. Major axis victory. I think this picture shows the effectiveness of CM's MG's...

  11. None of you guys have suggested a "hasty" fighting position. Sometimes a unit moving fast or under surprise attack might quickly prepare a spontanious dug-in position, really not more than belly deep. Dig about a 6" to 1' slit for your body and pile all the dirt and rocks in front of you. Not the best defense, but any dirt around you is better than none at all. Total time to dig-in? about one to two minutes (esp. with "incentives - Rat-tat-tat, BOOM!)

    My 2 cents

  12. I think Soliloquay hit this one on the head. No, the US would have negotiated peace in Europe LONG before we got to those numbers. However if the Axis forces both invaded the US and our native soil were underfoot, then yeah, we're not really the surrendering type either. Think of the partisin actions in the US and Canada if they had somehow been able to invade us.

I have always enjoyed reading alternative history books and stories on the subject. Anyone ever read SS-GB? Or Hitler Victorious?

  13. I just finished with a MINOR ALLIED VICTORY, though my actual casualties were far less than I had feared, only 67 KIA. Lost alot of vehicles though, I think about 16. My main thrust was the serpentine over the primary bridge, up the railroad and around the hill approach, with most of my dismounted infantry assaulting over that last hill. The final assault on the town was led by my two remaining challengers, fresh from their victory over the tiger, the two sextons, the crocodille the small 40mm wheeled armored car (I forget what type it was, like a ferret) and four halftracks. Just as half track number one was securing the railyard and my armor was smashing down the first big flag building on the edge of town, the JPZ IV shows up behind them. What a slug-fest. My Croc was behind the Challengers who couldn't bring guns to bear, and the Croc and the Jpz slugged it out for two minutes. Each scoring successive hits on the other. Yet no one scored a kill. Meanwhile the Sdkfz 7/1 ambushed my Sextons and knocked them BOTH out in one turn. He met a similar fate from one of the Challengers. Then I high tailed one of the challengers into a firing position and together with the now imobillized croc they slew the Jpz. By this time all my infantry has charged off the hillside and is sweeping through the town with little serious opposition.

I lost four tanks to the tiger and 88 on or near the bridge, even after I correctly assesed the need to cover the assault with smoke. Another to the 50mm covering the railroad track, and my last Sherman to one of the PZIV's who was covering that road into town. All totalled I lost at least 8 tanks due to getting bogged down in the mud. They weren't killed, but they might as well have been. Most of my artillery observers were killed prior to ever really getting any fire missions in. It was a bear keeping track of who and what is where in this one. I had my 25 lbr and one 4.5" morter in a halftrack and didn;t even realize I had them until they debarked at the railyard. By that time it was already a decided event. Good, challenging scenario. It's a grinder! I don't want to think about doing it again for some time. It drained me. What a great game. What other game can you play where you need to fall back for R&R after an intense operation? I'm really happy with that Minor Allied Victory. The issue was in doubt for most of the game. I didn't see what turn it ended on, but I was running out of time. I think it was turn 57 when I finally got into the town. Great Job Kwazy!

  14. ***Spoilers***

Kwazy, You bastard! smile.gif This has been a very rewarding, yet infuriating scenario. The most challenging one I have played to date.

The ONE thing that is causing me the MOST grief is the weather. I have lost almost as many vehicles to "bogging in" as I have to enemy action. Three were bogged in at the reinforcement arrival area! Very nice touch. The 88 and 50 AT guns were also difficult. Now, having silenced them and gained the first bridge, I am loosing vehicles to a tiger and a pair of pzkfw IV's!!! How will it end? I haven't even gotten into the city and I have lost too many units. Very bloody. Very frustrating. Very fun!
