1. Miles: I second Blackhorse's thanks to you for that link. Another great hunting resource as well!

In one of my old DOS favorites, Empire Deluxe, I made a decent scale map of the Great Lakes area for a hypothetical Soviet invasion (y'know, from their Canadian client state- long story). Then the Red Army rolled up Michigan and I got to crush all my friends' and family's houses. Huge naval shootout on Lake Huron. Fun stuff.

I'm sure we would get along.

I had some rough experiences with Bourbon.

Never could stand the stuff. My dad drank Jim Beam, so that was all I could steal, and I had decided I wasn't a whisky drinker. Discovering scotch changed my life. I was headed down, down, spiraling under the kitchen sink where the floor cleaners and, apparently, Username are found, when I discovered the true nectar of the gods.

Oh no, beer - never heard of Sing Ha. Are you sure it is not Chinese Tsingtau beer?

Yes. Very. Seek it out- a lot of Thai restaurants serve it here in CA. Avoid the other Thai offering found in some, called Chang- yecch. Sing Ha is the name you want on the label, spelled just like that. From Thailand. A little similar to Dos Equi Amber if you like Mexican stuff (liquids, that is) but better.

Keeping your request, rather than our preferences, in mind, I would recommend you start with Dewar's. Ice yes, water on the side, never soda.

Next stop, Johnnie Walker Black. Now you've bracketed the quality light and darks of the blended spectrum. Nice whiskies, no shocks to the system.

If you're still with us (will this all be in the same night?) follow the recommendations above. Many single malts WILL taste like cat piss until you've acquired the palate.

If I want to drink something bland, I order Heineken.

Believe it or not, my favorite beer and a frequent CM companion is from Thailand: Sing Ha (Germans established the original brewery around WWI). Washes down the scotch real good.

    (pirate voice) Aye, har.

  5. Sounds like you and 50ml both go for the smokeys. Johnny Black should be right up your alley.

If your experience with blends is "Famous Grouse" you are in for a treat. The Grouse was highly recommended to me (could only get it at duty-free back then) and I was disappointed.

I would rather sip the Lagavulin, Talisker, or Laphroiag, to be sure, but due to cost I reserve them for special occasions and nights out.

  6. There are reasons for blending that go well beyond cost. The blender tries to achieve a subtle balance of flavors and smoothness.

Johnny Walker Black is a tribute to the blender's art, and more drinkable than many single malts. Dewar's is another, though it's too light for me (I think Oban is one of the main ingredients). I have tried the JW Blue but no way is it worth the money, IMO. And money matters.

I am not a casual scotch drinker; I don't drink much beer, so scotch is a serious thing, like CM. Applying "cheapo, trashy" to Johnny Walker Black is like saying only real-time wargames are valid.

Now, the Red is best served in coffee, for fishing, or after a fair amount of the Black. But the Black is a fine whisky and fit to take its place in the Pantheon of noble spirits. I have forgiven the UK much for producing it. Be kind to it, Germanboy.

I would choose a key. And that key would fit the lock on the cage that would fit all the old bastards who started the frigging war. Then I would put the cage on a barge and tow it out to sea open the stopcocks and toss the key into the ocean. That is the way to fight a war.

Horses**t. In some perfect world, it might prevent one, but it is not the way to fight one.

Get yourself some landing craft and AP in the tube and a WHOLE BUNCH of HE dialed-in, and make a real difference in people's lives.

Sometimes there really are good guys and bad guys at the top. Tell the difference. Take stands. Buy War Bonds.

  8. Wow, this board never fails. A thread about scotch with a mention of Laphroaig. Talisker, anyone?

Would you like something even more controversial? OK: 2 ozs. of Johnny Walker Black will improve your groups with a revolver. NO MORE. 2 ozs. And for snobs, it's mostly Lagavulin anyway.

Bombay is a tad perfumey for me, though I quaff it gladly. But the Dutch invented genever, and I'll take a Bokma anyday. Love that stuff.

Hmmm... if a 33.6K is crappy, my wretched 28.8 is _____? (Best I can get at home, but I got my patch this AM.)

Anyway, I'm with aka_tom_w on this one as the threads will show. I think it would be cool. I spend a lot of time reading topos in the wild and I love them, but they're not the same as being there, and they are often out of date and wrong. Aerial photos are very misleading, too (the two together are about right- I recon hunting spots in the Sierras with the Terraserver).

Topos don't show vegetation well, and aerials flatten topography. Most COs at the CM level didn't have the aerials, and how many squads had topos?

I always play with trees on. There is a little irony in wanting a more realistic approach to terrain views, and then "switching off" the trees (wish I could do that hunting sometimes).

    Not anymore. smile.gif

Juju, I never had a lock up, but some of the screwed video when a turn is first opened definitely seems related to OE running in the background.

If I kill everything (OE and CM), restart CM, and load the same file from the same location, it works fine.

  11. You're right. I fixed it, above.

    The word from BTS is:

"It is STRONGLY recommended that you have a 3D graphics card with a minimum of 8MB of VRAM (i.e. texture memory). Any system under 200MHz most likely will not run Combat Mission adequately without one. Our recommended system is one that runs in excess of 200MHz and has a 3D card with 16MB or more of VRAM. A 4MB card will work, but graphical quality will be greatly reduced.

"Windows Users - You will need Microsoft DirectX version 6 or later.

"MacOS Users - You will need SoundSprocket (part of Game Sprockets)."

Our M60 series main battle tanks were armed with the British-designed M68 105mm. At the Armor School in Fort Knox, in 1977, we were taught that the APDS was our "primary armor defeating round" and that HEAT rounds were for flank/rear shots on Soviet tanks and softer IFVs (in other words- don't waste your sabots on BMPs and BRDMs). This philosophy was matched by the standard load-out, which was mostly sabot.

Murx: Metric conversion is a little off, there. 3kg is more like 6 1/2 pounds.

  13. Well, they DID ask us to drop it.

It's clear that some animosity exists, especially after the pointless and stupid exchanges of recent days.

I'm sure there's always one more thing to say, but we should just let BTS handle CC. CCs loyal followers, like ours, will never be swayed by argument or invective- we just draw more trolls and stupidity here, and get a very bad reputation for ourselves.

So we should comply with BTSs wishes, as they have complied with so many of ours, and drop it.

  14. If you are having trouble with CM's incredible graphics, here is a summary of all video troubleshooting tips from 50,000 posts:

    1) Download latest drivers for your video card. Almost always works.

    2) Buy a video card. If you don't have a separate video card and are using the computer's on-board integrated video, that's your problem. If you don't know which one to buy, start a thread about any brand you can think of, and you will receive at least 20 informed, technical responses about why it's no good (but you can learn a ton for free).

    3) Buy a new computer. A CPU speed in the triple-digit range will enhance your enjoyment of not only CM, but many other exciting games. Network it with your old one and teach your girlfriend to play.

If you have completed the above and it still won't run, it's because your operating system is Windows NT:

**At the DOS prompt, type C:format

    Answer yes to everything.

    Install something else.

    Play Combat Mission.

**Just kidding. Don't really do this. This was a lame joke. Always wear safety goggles and hearing protection while playing any war game, and please don't drink and post to this or any board, especially if pregnant.

Oh, yeah: If you load a PBEM file and it looks weird, close Combat Mission and all other apps. Reopen CM and reload the file. Usually works. If not, your opponent has an Apple and is using a weird format (make him stop) or is an AOL member and is sending in their "proprietary" e-mail encoding (have him resend "in the clear").
