I believe a large problem with the bombing of that retreating 'convoy' is that quite a significant proportion of it wasn't military at all and so quite a few civilians were getting zapped. Also, why bother killing a bunch of fleeing soldiers? It's not like they were a threat to anyone.

I'm trying to recall where i heard more about that Convoy, probably BBC, but can't be sure.

    PeterNZ<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Actually, no civillians were found to be in the convoy. There were Iraqi soldiers driving pillaged and looted Kuwaiti Mercedes Benz and Rolls Royces, but by and large the Iraqis were still using military vehicles. We bombed them not necessarily because they were retreating, but rather because they were retreating WITH their weapons. There is a semi-famous picture of the "Highway of Death" showing a Chinese made Type 59 MBT blown onto the highway divider. There were also many shots of charred bodies, etc. that made an unfavorable impression on the American public and bombing was halted. So, because of this, the Iraqis managed to pull out some 10,000 troops before the 24th Infantry Division cut off the Kuwait-Basra highway.

  2. I am in agreement with Fionn et al. War is war - its not pretty. I don't like stupid rules attached to something that, while it may or may not be stupid, is very serious.

Here are some other dumb "laws" of war we soldiers are supposed to abide by:

    1. You cannot use any weapon larger that 7.62mm in diameter against personnel. Weapons such as 12.7mm, 14.5mm and 25mm guns are anti-materiel weapons. To get around this in the Army, should we ever use it, we just say "Oh, we weren't targeting the enemy soldier, we were aiming for his uniform (or rifle, or canteen, etc.)"

    2. You cannot shoot an enemy soldier when assaulting a killzone - i.e. no double tapping. This makes sense at first till you've actually assaulted through a killzone - is that soldier in front of you already dead, wounded, or is he faking it to shoot me in the back? I'd rather shoot first if you know what I mean. The way you assault a killzone is that you basically spring an ambush and run through the general vicinity of the targets. Upon reaching 10-20 meters beyond the killzone, you form a 360 degree perimeter, THEN call out the POW/Search, aid/litter, and demo teams. You do NOT stop in the middle of the killzone to check each and every enemy body. That kind of defeats the whole idea of assaulting...

    3. This isn't an actual law of warfare, but rather a new policy set fourth by the army. You cannot utilize smoke grenades (of any sort) without donning your protective (gas) mask.

Hope this isn't too off topic.

COURT - noun. Nouns can be plural.

MARTIAL - adjective. adjectives not pural, never, no way, nuh-uh. Unless you're watching the Cleveland Browns wink.gif of course.

LOL. I knew courts-martial was right, but I don't know why I didn't use it.

Thanks Babra. And to think I used to edit and publish magazines...

  4. I bet you that if CNN - or anyone from the press for that matter - was present when the M9 Armored Combat Earthmovers were burying those Iraqis there would have been a court martial. As I understand it, the proposed court martials were pre-emptive, to show the press that had this story become big news that the Army was already working to punish those involved, even if they were doing their job.

Such is the way things work in the military these days..

The Germans put up stiff resistance from the very beginning. One tank company lost six Shermans to German panzerfausts. Fanatical Germans defending one position refused to surrender and were run over and buried alive by one of the 741st's dozer tanks

Sheesh, what a way to go.

    Ethan<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

In Desert Storm, the 1st Infantry Division buried alive hundreds of Iraqis while making the initial breach in the Iraqi defenses. There was talk about court-martials until the 1st ID commander accepted responsibility for his units actions.

I guess something about expecting 60-80% casualites in the 1st ID during the breach made the soldiers of the Big Red One a little less forgiving toward their enemies.

  7. Howdy folks

Did I miss something entirely? I read somewhere that 100 players have signed up to play the CMMC, but I can't find a link or instructions on how to sign up for it. Am I loosing my eyesight so quickly? I'd love to play as Germans or Americans. This is such a cool idea...

Modern requires a HUGE rewrite and additional code. We want to do it, but it will never ever be a "module" or minor effort. We are talking about a year and a half's worth of work MINIMUM. Plus, Charles and I don't know enough about modern stuff so we would need help. We have all the help we need, don't worry smile.gif, but it means coding will go MUCH slower than for WWII stuff because we know it FAR better.

Having said that, we want a modern version too smile.gif

    <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

    Sigh...

Well... if you ever need a modern infantryman to try out a modern version of give you specific info (like the M60 MG tends to jam every other round wink.gif ), you know where to look.

  9. Howdy folks

    I'm just curious:

    1. Is the scenario editor also a campaign editor? Can we make a force and take it from one engagement of our own creation to the next?

    2. Can we make/use graphical mods in the gold version of the game? I saw a jpeg somewhere (CMHQ?) of two shermans with the Korean-war style roaring tiger camouflage. Can this be done with the release version?

    3. Please - please - make a modern era CM. Please. I'm an infantryman and CM is already a valuable learning tool for us (25% of my unit has the beta demo) as is, but throw in M-1A1s, M-2s, ATGMs and whatnot... you'll make a lot of people wet their pants. Maybe even a few government contracts... <hint, hint>. smile.gif

Thanks folks and remember - fire and maneuver
