Allied Mission - Mortain/ Luttich

Hi all,

this scenario is driving me insane.

You need to conquer two german villages with 5 units of infantry. The first village has 1 PAK and 2 HMG but with a wide flanking move I was able to take it with only 5 casualties. That's 4 1/2 squads left. Plus you get two additional squads and two paks as reinforcement. I've also captured the one PAK from the first village. The second village has another PAK, FLAK and at least one squad.

If it wasn't for the Tank force that is triggered when you attack the second village it would be easy to take them out. The way it is I'm struggling to get the reinforcements into position quickly enough and to man the guns with at least one Paratrooper with gunnery above 30. The crew that comes with the PAK has no skills. All the while I'm trying to silence the second PAK from the second village.

I've been trying to win this scenario without suffering too many casualties. I did win it several times but only had 1 1/2 sqads left.

Any hints as to how you take out the second village and where you position your forces to repel the tank force would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Ras

Go into the scenario editor and add a few friendly tanks :D That was the only way I could get through the scenario. But even than it was a tough one to win.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the reply.

Tank reinforcements unauthorized by the HQ? You cheater. Lol. :D

I finally did it with satisfactory results. I lost 25 men. It's my best result so far.

First I took the first village. I approached it from the left front, slowly crawling into position.

One squad attacks the rear cottage on the left, one waits at the corner of the left forward, one holds the center of the left forward cottage and one crawls around the right corner of the forward left cottage.

If you have access to the sniper then you can distract the AT gun in the center. Careful though.

After taking the left flank I slowly advanced and took cottage by cottage, sometimes attacking from two sides, so as not to fall prey to the HMG's.

After securing the first village I used the captured AT gun to kill off the AT gun in the second village. I left my gun manned to be able to react to the remanning of the gun. Otherwise I ignored the second village for the time being.

The reinforcements + two sqads of Paras I sent to the slope behind the rear left cottage. It took me ages to find the sweet spot for the AT guns.

The drivers of the lorries make good gun commanders but the rest of the crew sucks. You need to man the guns with Paras with gun experience.

Once the tanks come over the hill it gets really hairy. If your guns are not positioned correctly you'll be shot to pieces. I was on the edge of my seat and cheered when I took them out. I was actually able to capture a Panther and one of the armoured vehicles this time. With those two and the remaining infantry it's not that difficult to attack the village from two sides. In the end I just drove my captured tank over the remaining Krauts to save the lifes of my men.

In the mission editor I saw that a lot of the Germans in this mission are elite, which explains why my soldiers always loose in close combat.
