I would phrase it differently.

Today, December 7th, should be a reminder to all Americans of the price that our families paid many years ago...for being unprepared.

And the day after, the United States declared war on Japan.

As did the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Dec 8th (on this side of the dateline) saw similar surprise attacks on Hong Kong, Philipines, Malaya.

2 days time is the anniversary of the sinking of Force "Z" - Prince of Wales and Repulse - as it sortied to try to intercept more Japanese landings in Malaya.

Now acknowledged on the proper day. ;)

In certain naval circles of those days, the fate of Force Z was even more of a shock than Pearl Harbor. Until then, a rather persistent argument remained within several nation's navies that attacking aircraft could not sink a heavy capital ship maneuvering and evading under its own power. This is how raids like Taranto or Pearl could be "disqualified" on assessing vulnerability of battleships to air attack.

But with the defeat of Force Z, the argument died then & there, and many even in the Japanese Navy were also surprised by the result.
