A sound contact indicates that your troops have heard what they think is a [tank, inf squad, light armor, etc] and they are pretty sure it's about where the sound contact object is. This lets you know that one of those is around and is generally in that direction, but be aware that the actual location of the thing making the noise may be quite far (as in 10's of meters) from where it is indicated. Predictably, a tank going "fast" makes more noise (and easier to "sound" spot) than one "move"-ing. And so on.
