Gen. Sosaboski
Hey all, Just wondering (seeing all the info on the Russian rifle squads and such) if anyone out there happens to know about the OOB/TO&E of an American TD Company/Battalion. I know about the Nafiziger (sp?) collection and if all else fails I'll contact them, but any info?
Slapdragon
US Tank destroyers were tasked into 5 tank platoons with 4 platoons (sometimes 3) to a company. The M20 was used as a standard liason vehicle. Most TD battalions would have all the same vehicle to ease supply -- for example the 3rd Army had 12 TD battalions in November of 1944, 5 with M36, 2 with M18, and 4 with M10 (all replaced with M36 by December), and 1 towed 76mm. It should be remembered though that TD battalions rarely fough as cohesive units, instead getting hived off to divisions and then getting split across battalions. Also, M10 units suffered such heavy losses that they would get reorganized in the field with few tanks per platoon, fewer platoons per company, and so forth. The best US TD history is probably Reluctant Valor by Evans.
