There's a search function associated with the forum you can use to get all the details. In short however, smoke grenades were used as markers not to create smokescreens. Has a good, detailed anecdotal story about just that, plus includes photos of marines throwing smoke grenades (seperate from his story). So it was used in the pacific at least.
