Fire one

I assume that terrain that is on fire can not be occupied by any units. If so can a unit with a couple matchs (or a flame thrower) set the terrain of fire on purpose? This could be hell on the attacker if all the cover he tought he was going to have suddenly went up in smoke.

Yes, terrain that is on fire can not be occupied by any unit. Units already in the terrain will get out as fast as possible. Generally this is done without casualties, but they can happen they linger too long. Vehicles can also become disabled and then probably knocked out.

A flamethrower can sometimes spark up terrain. Depends on the terrain and weather conditions, as well as how much flame is expelled on the location. As always randomness is in there too.

We decided to NOT allow an ASL "kindling" concept to be in CM. Generally troops did not light stuff on fire as it was most often counter productive. Tactical fires were simply not a part of warfare. Scorched earth was, but nobody in a tactical situation was very concerned about this. Rear units would take care of it, or front line ones that weren't engaged in combat.

The editor does allow you to start with terrain on fire too.
