    Thank you for answering,

I don't want to open a new thread, maybe you can help me? Is there a demo version of engine 4?

What alpha  said. You probably won't notice the difference, as there really isn't many significant differences. Hull down and combine squad commands are really the two noticeable ones.

Look, stop making yourself look foolish by trying to point out if what she has brought forth is truth or lies. It does not matter

It should matter. It's about the fact that when people believe lies on the internet, everyone that isn't you or me is going to believe that ALL gamers are like that. Information needs to come from a reliable source, and I think that if we take information, it should be from somewhere we can trust. Unless you want the general public to automatically assume we are all pedophiles and ,murderers. That's how she makes it sound We can't fix a problem if we don't have facts.

    Ok, that's a start.

    - Why is the article nonsense? Any evidence except your gut feeling?

    - Sexual harassment even a serious issue? Very good. Serious issues should be treated and answered seriously. Would you not agree?

    - Not listen? On the contrary: I think, one should listen to any body. If you had an issue with something, it very well may be that I don't understand what your problem is. But still it would be an issue for you, which you most probably would like to see properly addressed and not neglected.

So, this lady has an issue with sexual harassment in gaming. Is she exaggerating? May be. I don't know, but my gut feeling (and some reading) tells me: Most likely, she is not too far off.

Does that make sexual harassment in any form and place acceptable? Certainly not. And so we should say.

My issue is that she seems to be attacking geeks and making stuff up to draw negative attention. Of course you can't prove  that it isn't true, but you can't prove it isn't made up  either.  It's just that a lot of her experiences seem to be highly unlikely, or massively exaggerated. People do this all the time. They try to further their agenda, while attacking other people and using them as a scapegoat. It happens to video games all the time, and usually it's just to cause a riot more than anything else.   It's not "blowing off the issue" to me, it's just that we shouldn't be taking information based from biased or false information. We should be welcoming of anyone, but when we give someone on the internet attention for giving slanderous and hateful information, we not only reinforce people doing such things for the publicity, it also makes everyone in that hobby look bad. But thankfully everyone I've seen is very welcoming towards everyone.

    Geckocalypse,

If I haven't already greeted you (unsure), welcome aboard!

Thank you, nice to meet you.

Sorry that you had to have such an experience. I wasn't trying to say that such things don't happen, its just that I would think any police officer who would want to keep their job would call someone a "slut' over the telephone. They surely record phone calls, and I think it's unlikely that he would do that. Or it's the most hateful police station ever.

My friend, what exactly are you trying to defend?

I'm just saying that the article is nonsense. I'm saying that it's a serious issue, but we shouldn't listen and give attention  to people who are biased and attack other groups themselves. The article is less about equality and more about making the nerds look bad.

What means "fake" in the time of "alternate facts"??

I don't understand what you mean.  I agree that anyone getting harassed is unacceptable, but I also don't encourage people pretending to be victims, and drawing attention to false, or wildy exaggerated articles that seem to be attacking a group. There might be some small grain of truth in some of the examples she gives, but I'm sure most of it is bull****, or that she is outright lying for attention.

So no wonder , we hardly see any woman in the hobby if this is a reflection of what they experience

The reason you don't see many women is because it simply isn't aimed towards them. Most think it looks boring or stupid, I have actually heard this from them, same thing with things like MTG. Wargames are aimed towards males.  If they wanted to play the games I don't think that a couple of assholes would stop them. Would you stop doing something you enjoy because of a few people? You would just find someone else to play with. Apparently Malifaux draws a lot of women in though.

  6. That article is so fake it's incredible.  She just wrote that to get attention to herself by pretending to be a victim. Wargamers are a scary bunch, but do you really believe ithat a police officer called her a drunk slut over the telephone? Or the part of chanting "Old enough to bleed"? Harassment exists, but this person is just spouting out nonsense to create drama. Every time I have ever been into a game store the guys seem more loud and obnoxious than anything else. They all seem really eager to get more people into the games.

And I also think that it's  far worse online. Most people aren't going to act that belligerent in person.

If you want seriously detailed wargaming you need to step away from the computer and take a look at Leading Edge Games' dice & paper ruleset, Phoenix Command.

Except for the fact I don't have anyone to play with. I'm pretty sure I've heard of that game before. Isn't that that the game that was literally designed by a rocket scientist?

No that's not quite right. Leaves do block LOS. From Steve's post linked above:

"The way it works is the LOS line is "degraded" as it is drawn from point to point.  The more cumulative crap in the way the less strong the line becomes.  The quality of the spotter, the less restrictions on view, etc. give the line a higher starting value than a LOS line drawn from a unit with negative factors.  Some of the factors are specific (restrictions on range of view or height for example), others are general (optics of X type vs. eyeballs is the best example).  Each piece of terrain has ratings which determine how much the line is degraded when it comes to that piece.  At some point the line is so degraded that it is considered "blocked". "

Yes, but it also says that the 3d graphics of the foilage isn't considered. I assumed that included the tree leaves.

Combat Mission games are the most realistic by far. There are other tactical games with a focus on realism that I like: Graviteam Tactics series, Steel Panthers (originally DOS series but since massively updated by Shrapnel Games).

You can also try older Close Combat games (specifically any that have dynamic campaign maps) to see if you'd like them now, I play them once in a while, currently have CC The Longest Day installed. And if you don't mind stepping into slightly gamey territory but still with realistic theme running through them - Men of War series, Wargame series and recent Steel Division which is actually a lot closer to being a proper wargame than its predecessors (Wargame series).

And then there's Jagged Alliance 2. It may be an atypical suggestion for this topic but when played with 1.13 mod (which is what BMS is to Falcon 4.0) it's quite a realistic and in-depth tactical game that surely pulls all the right strings in a Combat Mission player that is me

I have havel most of those. Men of War is actually what made me want to look for more realistic games.I was looking at Steel Division and Steel Panther. I was also debating on buying War in the East, but I'm not sure if I would like a game on that scale.

I suppose the most realistic sim is the one that wounds or kills you . . .

Short of that, I think Combat Mission is an exceptional tactical wargame and Command Ops 2 a very good operational wargame.  Unlike RTS shooters, they let you see the battles unfold and show you the how your decisions affect combat results.

I realize that it's a really dumb question, but I was just wondering what similar games people on here play. Was thinking about buying something on the operational sxale, but I don't know if I would enjoy the way they play.

  11. Appreciate the info, thank you. Although I'm not sure I completely understand. From what I gathered, the bushes with the exception of those really thick ones (like in the screenshot with the forward observer), and the leaves on the tress don't affect anything, only trunks block vision and fire. Is there more info on the spotting rules anywhere? I'm actually doing a PBEM with someone now and I would like to be able to make an educated guess as to if his tanks can see my guys. I would assume that tanks have shoddy vision ranges with the spotter dowm, but I know next to nothing about military hardware aside from some generalizations I learned from other games.

  12. Not sure if I'm not understanding how spotting works or what, but it seems off. I consistently get ai that seems to see through trees and bushes, and the same for my guys. There are times when I swear that guys shouldn't be able to see something and they do. Example. My guys in the woods. The guy closer up is part of a different team and can't see the guy in question.0DB4FD37F33CDC2CD227BA3E53E584302429D372

The guy they can see. The camera is oriented towards him in the screenshot above.

Is there some extremely tiny gap in the leaves, or do leaves and bushes not block LOS?

Edit. Had another shot of the targeting line but it wont let me post three images.

  13. Depends on what time frame interests you like most/what you want out of it.  As the others have said Battle for Normandy has the most content as of right now, but don't think the other games are skimpy on value either.  There's several campaigns in each game, a bunch of scenarios,  a quick battle generator, and multiple forms of multiplayer. And each scenario can last you awhile depending on your ability or desire to do better.  I heard Shock Force wasn't very good, but I haven't actually played it. I liked the Normandy demo, but haven't bought the game yet, and I'm really enjoying Black Sea so far.

  14. I've been looking into buying more simulation games and was wondering what are the absolute most realistic sims you can get ahold of without actually being in the military? I have Steel Beasts and some CM games and was considering getting something like CMANO or Tacops. Then I saw some stuff like Decisive Action or Point of Attack but never heard of them before yesterday. Could someone give any recommendations for sims of any time between WW1 and Modern?
