It was funny when he brought up visiting an old (American) friend who lives in Moscow with his family he was told Russia is good but don't get into politics. Very on-the-nose statement about the social contract I've read about that exists between Putin and the Russian people: you don't get into politics and I'll improve your standard of living.
Hopefully it gets better in the remaining 2.5 hours but I figured I'd share that stuff as a warning for anyone with a low tolerance for BS. Oh and it's Lex Fridman's podcast on youtube for anyone who wants the full thing.

Today's Ukraine the latest has deep and nuanced look at the replacement of Zaluzny, I highly recommend it.
I second this. If people don't have time though I'll try my best with the takeaways I had.
I didn't know Gen. Milley and Zaluzhny had a poor relationship. Also the observation by the British international volunteer that some of the men who like Zaluzhny/dislike Syrskyi is because "they're old (the average UKR soldier is 43 compared to 26 for WW2 for reference, but that's a whole other issue) and want to sit in their trenches smoking and getting fat while waiting for the next Western magic bullet aid to arrive" and that Syrskyi is much more up 'n at 'em, let's get to it compared to Zaluzhny. So I can see why some see him as bloody or a butcher if he's more willing to put men in harms way. Zaluzhny is seen as a people's or politician's general and is much warmer with the men, Syrskyi is seen as much more business-like and a general's general.
They also mention the McClellan/Grant comparison and how part of that decision came from McClellan being seen as too cautious and while Grant and Sherman were seen as bloody/butchers, the Union decided a shorter more bloody war was better than a war dragged out with extra unknowns.

I haven't bothered watching it either but reading about it there doesn't seem to be a lot of substance about the war itself. Putin apparently goes into a 30 minute history lesson starting with Novgorod in 862. And the usual NATO expansion spiel. I'll give Carlson credit, apparently he presses Putin about releasing Gershkovich, the WSJ jounralist jailed for over a year.

Way back we discussed the striking difference between amounts of Russian soldiers coming from big cities (almost none) and those from rural area's (loads).
And I stumbled on this surprising video from a guy who checked out British Army demographics and recruitment-issues.
Do not be fooled by the title of his video, this is not a crazy rightwing nutcase or woke-hating dumbass.
His research and investigation are quite factual as far as I can see, and the title of his video is based on the fact that the UK government and Army for years and years tried to make the Army as inclusive as possible by making it easier for women, LBTH, minorities etc, ("Woke influence") to join up, but he discovered that it did NOT work out as planned. And partially because of that, the British army has huge problems with getting enough recruits/volunteers.
My understanding is that this problem is also playing up in the Netherlands, and I suspect in more West-European countries. (No idea if it is a problem in the USA). It has a possible profound effect on the near-future strenght of (some) Nato-countries. Which connects this issue directly to the Ukraine-Russo war, because of escalatory possibilities.
If you do think his conclusions are unjust or too far fetched, please let me know.
I'm gonna post it again for posterity.
This guy is uncredible at best but comes across as a "neutral" critic of the west/Ukraine in a poor attempt to seem unbiased. I don't know why people bother linking him.

I don't know if this has been mentioned here, and even if it hasn't I assume it was thought of, but why not release the CMBS module with all proceeds going to a charity? Presumably a Ukrainian one but even something neutral like the Red Cross could be an option.

Besides being a great daily weekday podcast on the war, today's episode featured an interview with the lead of the Russia/Ukraine team at the Institute for the Study of War. He talks about things such as how their day to day job is, sourcing and how that works, and some of his takes and conclusions about the war and its direction (and a couple wrong ones they had in the past).
Interview starts around 26:40.

Strong warning: Video shows the aftermaths of the ambushes and looting of bodies all in first person view.
I'm sharing it though because the poster's provided background on the compilation mentions that they take place in the least talked about front in the north:
"Source of this footage claims these ambushes happened on the northern border, where practically no battles happen. So it makes sense that all important armoured vehicles are used on the frontlines, while regular cars are used in “calm” areas. These ambushes and raids happen from both sides btw"
I sounds like the border is quite porous both ways unfortunately.

Edit: Just noticed the title says Bakhmut but the video features Bradleys. Either the title is wrong, the 47th Brigade is spread over multiple fronts, relocated, or aren't the only ones with Bradleys. The one at the end has a 3/7 or 37 marking and 371 as well, but I assume that's an individual/platoon designation like Wehrmacht AFVs had instead of a larger unit.

Don't know if this is totally appropriate here since it isn't necessarily military related but Vice interviewed Maria Lvova-Belova, the woman who alongside Putin has a warrant for her arrest from the ICC for the taking of Ukrainian Children. Some have said they shouldn't have given her a platform but VICE throws tough questions at her and I think the interview is not only valuable today but also will be years or decades from now as a historical primary source.
