  1. Ugh, two weeks has not improved this place; perhaps I should take the evening work again.

Palladium, after a promising day or two of posts, has disappeared from the scene.  Likely the turn I am waiting for will show another horizon shaded by the pyres of burning armored vehicles....

    Speedbump

It might at that; did you bring vehicles? Probably not, it would imply a grasp of tactics beyond that of old Earl Haig.

  2. I am of the opinion that young Palladium is a reincarnation of a rather more aged Cesspool denizen, certainly knowledge of the olde '300 post limit' is not to be taken lightly.

Infandum, O Stuka, iubes renovare dolorem... of days gone by when panicked Syrian pixeltruppen grease the treads of the invincible Abrams; the game I'd been seeking for decades appears in a bargain bin (of all places); and such a seemingly nice forum is marred by a single thread, a great gutter of grognards, this junta of the senile...

Palladium has been granted the opportunity to extend my one match winning streak.  We have downloaded the new Black Sea battleground and of course the gamey bastidge chose Americans and gave me Ukrainians attacking across two miles of open fields.

... like Sir Speedbump here, who despite his inability to tell a Pallas from a Priapus, clearly has command of multiple tongues, indeed, forked ones. My Moscovite tankers await the next batch of Kievian fish-stories with great anticipation, along with surrender notices.
  3. You shall have it, Sir! Email sent. I shall take your beverage recommendation under advisement, a good IPA is always a fine thing.

Now to you and your nickname.  I hate to break the bad news to you, but your autocorrect feature (clearly required) has changed your attempt to refer to yourself as Paladin, to Palladium... The good news is Chemists everywhere have become your biggest fans.

To say nothing of my fame amongst the Classics majors; one should cherish the rare opportunities to build consensus. On the subject of Autocorrect, Sir Speedbump, the singular of 'alumni' is 'alumnus', though I would not doubt the existence of multiple chattering voices in that skull of yours. How are you all today? Do the men in white know where you are?

  4. Yes, Sir Speedbump of the Shavian House, why ARE you under the Australian table? I suppose you will claim it was a commando raid gone poorly --  don't know about toasts, but you appear toasted.

Many thanks for your considerate counsel, but I'm going to ignore your advice. There is too much to do: enemies to drive before... lamentations to hear... horses to ride... wives and daughters to embrace...

Speaking of lamentations, the mead is decent, but there is an appalling shortage of good beer in this den of infirmity... {rummage} ... Coorsweiser? What is this?!
  5. Three days it has been without a sign of habitation, and the Cesspool door creaks loudly when pushed... oh, wait that's Joe Shaw. Is there any life in this old place, or has Dalem's poetry done you all in?

Good Knights! -- I use that term reservedly, as I haven't seen a single one of you jump in an 'L' shape yet -- while you were snoring in varying degrees of drunken stupor, a new game has been released to an unsuspecting public. To arms! To horse! To armed horses! To horses under each arm! The Breadbasket of Europe beckons, and by the shores of the Dnieper River rest new hamlets, fresh for the cratering.

Why sprawl you sleeping? I remember days when 300 posts was the magic number, when the denizens of the Mutha Beautiful Thread would storm forth to pastures and conquests new! Has the old spark been lost? Are the old grognards gone forever? Have the beer and pretzels finally run out? Say it isn't so, and let the glory of the immortal Peng Challenge wax eternal!

  6. You heard me! In Go player circles, they say you should lose your first 50 games as soon as possible, and I haven't lost any CM:BS matches yet! I played CM:SF a fair amount but have been out of the loop for the CMx2 WW2 stuff since then.

I'm up for a QB, a quick scenario, anything. RT, or starting a WEGO (do people play Real-Time? I've heard a lot of people saying they don't like it.) Smaller battles (say, company-sized or smaller) is probably best for starters. Anyone up for a game?

Please forget Saving Private Ryan. Captain Charles Hazlett UPHAM, VC and Bar, NZ Infantry, is the only non-medical British and Commonwealth soldier ever to win the Victoria cross twice.

    Cheers,

    Andy Brown

That would probably be quite heartening to Lt Glenn Upham, were he better-versed in the Africa campaign, or were he a student of New Zealand's military history.

Sadly, we shall have to wait for a future module before any Commonwealth soldiers can be around to tell him. ;):D

  8. Man, I love that Tropentarn uniform. Why the hell couldn't we make a smart uniform like that?

A fellow student of history once joked to me that the side with the best uniform tends to lose any given war... :P

But seriously, the Germans have long had a talent for good uniforms - in addition to their talents for armored warfare, small unit tactics, officer training. etc.. Generally good gents to have in a fight.

  9. Unheard of, yes, but an interesting thought experiment.

If a company of US Marines is entrenched in a defensive position with adequate support weapons and AT assets including MMGs, Javelins and tripod-mounted TOWs, how large a force of Syrians would you want before you even considered assaulting them?

three-to-one? four-to-one? A near-battalion of mech infantry supported by a company of T-72 TURMS? Could regulars pull it off, or would they have to be Guard?

  10. I've been trying to gain the habit of giving orders in RT, but often end up pausing at least a couple times in a scenario.

When planning an attack in RT, the 'pause' quick command is your friend. You can give a complex plan of attack with multiple waypoints and then have entire companies carry them out simultaneously, unit-by-unit. This way you plan things out while units wait in cover, then assault all at once.

Another thing, just because you can micromanage the fight and keep a blazing-fast tempo doesn't mean you must. Sometimes you can gain a superior position and let the enemy come to you. When I first started playing this game, one of my major faults was that I sent units charging into CQB when I could have pounded the enemy position with automatic fire for a good long while first. I also thought the seven minutes it took to call in artillery was painfully long.

If you examine AARs from combat units, or stories from recent history, phrases like "after another hour of hard fighting..." or "the position held out for 30 minutes before air support arrived" keep coming up. CM:SF proceeds rather faster than this, but not hugely faster.

  11. The modules too, are definitely worth getting. Playing the Stryker army infantry and then contrasting it with the more robust, but lighter-armed marine formations is a fascinating experience. With the light infantry (American airborne scenarios, anyone? :) ) found in the british module, you have almost the whole gamut of American ground forces.

This mentions nothing of the British forces (mortars!) and the ever-interesting experience of keeping out-gunned, scared Syrian troops in the fight. Nor does it speak of the great leap in scenario quality that accompanies the new modules.

    I highly recommend them.

  12. That would be the RPG-29, nisi fallor.* I could be wrong, though.

By the way, greetings to all! I picked up CM:SF for $5 in a bargain bin (shameful really, but very lucky) about two years ago and realized it was the realistic military game I'd waited years for. I've lurked in this forum off-and-on since, until recently when I purchased the two modules.

*'If I'm not mistaken,' as the Latin has it.
