  1. The systems of propaganda and discipline used by the German Army in WW2 meant that it remained a very capable force until the last few days of the war - by which time it was almost entirely drafted..

but so what? the level of conviction of those draftees was often higher than that of volunteers in other armies. its a technicality in many cases - they drafted so early - 16 yearsof age by 1944 - that they simply didn't have time to volunteer. syaing they were draftees isn't really an indictment of their motivation as it woudl be, in, say, the Vietnam war - where, i would point out the majority of us army servicemen were actually volunteers and not draftees.

  2. Yeah, I heard a similar line in "Braveheart" about how the Scottish nobles had so much more to lose than the poor clansmen. I am pretty sure that the poor person is risking exactly the same thing as the richer person. Life itself. Possessions mean absolutely NOTHING when you're dead.

you've misunderstood the reasoning completely. it has nothing to do with what happens after you're dead.

  3. Late war Western Front surely means The Bulgeā€¦.

    All the best,

    Kip.

I couldn't imagine it any other way.

unless of course you were imagining the channel ports - brest, brittany, dunkirk, calais, or the fighting in paris, or the operation dragoon in southern france and the 'champagne campaign', or perhaps the fighting in alsace, or the siege of metz, or the roer river, huertgen forest, aachen, market-garden, varsity, ect.

  4. its unfortunate that spike hasn't apparently done much research into finding an actual military advisor - the question of worthiness of the subject matter aside (there is no question there are still many, many worthy stories to be told regarding ww2) he's dragged the level of authenticity backwards a few steps with his grey painted m3 halftracks and smokepuffing cannons without recoil, etc. not that it matters if the story is good, but with the level or realism raised by other projects like saving private ryan ect. its a shame that the same high standards can't be maintained - and you would think an 'underdog' so to speak would try that much harder to 'get it right'. the same problem plagued the tuskeegee airmans movie on home box office a few years ago, with p-51 mustangs subtituting for p-40 and other type airplanes, which were used before the black fliars received their mustangs.

  5. Yes, pretty much so. Where it's not clear is the interpretation of what it means. I have two somewhat opposing views to offer:

    - many people who come to the GF do so after they check out the other game-related forums first, or the main website, or the RSS feeds, newsletter etc. Hence, the view count from the GF is comparatively low because people have already found out about the news from the prime sources

    - many people in the GF are not interested in our products at all and are exclusively visiting this forum. This would be a strong argument to close down the GF, actually. These forums do serve a purpose; there is a German phrase - "Selbstzweck" (self-purpose) - and these forums are not it. They are for fans of our games to be able to talk about off-topic stuff. You can see the announcements on top as a reminder of that, if you like. The number of announcements will vary (I usually try not to duplicate them too much), but they're going to stay. Compared to other forums which are bombarded with ads, pop-ups and pop-unders our forum is still far ahead and, if you do not purchase our games, for free. Considering that this is not a forum from some magazine site but the forum of a game company that's a darn good deal.

The point about having too many of them and in turn making them less special is valid. I have taken down duplicate announcements because of that already in the past, and some "small news" are generally not cross-posted here anyway. Hopefully a future version of vB would allow to rotate announcements or something like that. We will upgrade to 3.7 sooner or later, I'm not sure how announcements are handled there.

one other consideration that may also be valid is that some products have been announced four years ago with almost no form of update since there is nothing to report on in the way of progress at this time. as a consequence- there is nothing to talk about in the game forums. those of us waiting for napoleon or naval battles, etc. literally have nothing else to discuss - so if you delete the general forum, we will then have literally no reason to keep coming back to battlefront at all.

your call, but you run the risk of us forgetting about you altogether while we are waiting patiently for the games to be finished (never saw the point of posting idiotic 'is it done yet is it done yet' crap in the game forums - i'm betting you'll let your customers know when you've reached that point)

    your call.

  6. Are they extremely annoying, or very annoying, or merely annoying?

extremely annoying, given the sheer number of them. half a dozen or so seem to be a good number; more than that and i think people simple ignore them for sure as it simply defeats the purpose of having a special section for them. it seemed like a day or so ago there were 20 of them up there - *special* announcements cease to be special when they are in a list of 19 other *special* announcements - they just become something to scroll past quickly.

  7. I hope that CoFarmer's ISP has been sent to whatever local law enforcement jurisdiction he lives in. Not that anyone as pathetic and attention starved as him would actually be important enough to be dangerous, but weaklings like him sometimes do get recruited by local chapters of Aryan Nations-type organizations and occassionally do odd jobs for larger neo-Nazi type organizations until someone important realizes they're too stupid to do much but run for coffee and sandwiches. Still, just to be on the safe side....
