But naval artillery takes longer to call in, is less accurate and has a slower rate of fire. I hope they substitute for true naval fire in the final release.

I'm not sure what you are basing this comment on.  The US Navy uses the 5"/54 (127mm) Mk45 on current warships.  The loading system is automatic so the gun can maintain a fire rate of 16 to 20 rounds per minute (not taking into account cooling times), compared to the Marine Corps M777/155mm howitzer, that fires at a rate of 2 to 5 rounds per minute.  As far as accuracy is concerned, we conducted numerous gun fire support missions with the US Marine Corps and UK Royal Marines with exceptional accuracy.  We were hitting main battle tank sized objects from 10+ miles out.  As far as time to call in fire, you may be correct.  I don't have data to support or debunk that opinion.

Each of the 155mm platoons would be roughly equivalent to a pair of 6" naval canons. I would expect the naval guns to have more ammo though.

Perhaps the 155s are just place holders for the demo and when the full game is released they will be replaced with true naval artillery.

I do believe the guns are abstract and the game's 155's come closest to US Naval assets.   However, the Navy does not use 6" ordnance on current warships.  They use 5"/54 Mk45 (127mm).  Destroyers have one 5" gun and cruisers have two.  So, I'm assuming this scenario is simulating a cruiser and destroyer supporting the landing.  As a side note the newer Zumwalt class destroyers will have the 6"(155mm) advanced gun system (AGS).

  3. I use the rewind and watch a lot.  I know it provides info an overall tactical commander wouldn't have, but a tactical commander wouldn't have to micro manage, waypoints, target arcs etc.  Also in actual combat, tactical commanders would be getting contact information, expected contact information, possible shot direction, casualty reports, etc.  I can only get that kind of info from the rewinds.

  4. Playing "August Morning" and don't mind admitting it is kicking my Tail! The scenario developer must have a wicked mind. With the five AI plans, it doesn't matter how often I play, I never really know where that d$@# AGL team is - and of course I don't have enough mortar rounds to flatten all possible setup locations. I have lost count of how many times I have watched my men mowed down by a rain of 30mm grenades! This game is awesome!

  5. Good day to all and hope everyone is enjoying this incredible game experience as much as I am!

However, there is one issue with the game system that has been troubling me since the very earliest CM games.  I have the hardest time trying to estimate how much ammo expenditure a fire mission will use.  It would be very helpful to have an additional line in the fire mission panel that gave you the estimated amount of ammo usage based on your guns used, mission type and duration. This could be presented in a specific number or percentage.

    Thoughts?

  6. No, CMSF won't get the 2.0 update. The engine evolved too much between CMSF and CMBN to make it feasible.

Of course, there is CMSF2 on the horizon!

Thanks for the reply. Guess I'll be waiting for CMSF2 -- CMSF is probably my favorite game so it should hold me over until then.

  7. So does anyone know if, with the release of CM: Fortress Italy, will Battlefront be eventualy updating the CM: Shock Force to 2.0 engine? Based on thier web site it appears they plan on updating CM: Normandy in a couple months but I didn't see any mention of CM: Shock Force.

Armored arcs among other great additions to 2.0 would be greatly appreciated in Shock Force!

  8. Ok, so I’ve been waiting for someone to build a PBEM campaign that matches two evenly matched fictional antagonists. Looks like everyone is locked on to WWII historical or semi-historical so I am going to give it try myself.

I dusted off an old friend of mine – Avalon Hill’s TACTICS II – for inspiration and plan on converting it to a PBEM SC2 campaign. TACTICS II introduced me to war gaming 35 years ago and I am looking forward to incorporating the capabilities of SC2 to bring life back into this classic game!

My questions are which SC2 are most people playing and which format do you think would work best for a TACTICS II remake?

Right now I’m toying with the idea of SC WWI but set the game up as WWII.

  10. I have been playing SC since the beginning, entirely against the AI, and have had a blast with it. The newest version, “WWI” is my favorite and contains all the wish list items I had formed over the years except:

    - Combined attacks

    - Stacking (still bugs me that an air, AA or art. unit prevents a land unit from moving in)

    - Naval units should have an option to be placed on patrol which will allow it to "attempt" to automatically intercept and engage enemy naval units (similar to the concept of air interceptors and defensive art fire, except that at the end of a successful intercept your naval unit would end up adjacent to the fleet you just intercepted)

  11. I love this game! I was a little concerened that WWI would prove to be boring to represent in a game but have been very pleasantly suprised!

I was toying with the idea of builiding a new scenario with failry in depth use of this great games event engine and scripting capabilities but I am concerend that a new patch will come out shortly after creating it and make it obsolete. Is there an expected update/patch? If so, is it easy to update custom scenarios?
