  1. I have bought Actung Panzer and am finding it difficult to justify TOW Kursk...did anything improve from the last TOW in Africa (which I got bored of in 5 hours due to lack of tactics and wide open spaces)?

I tried the demo but didn't see anything new. AP Kharkov seems to have upped the standard...once you get used to the interface that is.

I have bought a lot of Battlefront stuff over the years since I discovered Combat Mission 1...so I only aim to encourage advancement!

  2. No, My PC can more than handle the graphics, there is no stutter and the smoke and explosions are excellent.......however the tanks, men etc move with a strange jolting action whilst everything else is ultra smooth....no slow down at all and it makes no difference whether I am on minimal graphics or have everything set to max!

Game is still playable but it just looks odd

Until I get the eventual CTD!!!

  3. ok, I got it working in the first german campaign.........would rather play custom battles but never mind only $45. Now I find on any graphics setting (and my pc is pretty powerful)the tank movement is very jerky rather than smooth. And the accuracy of fire is just silly.

I can see why no refund is offered!

On a positive note I have bought all the combat mission series, TOW 1, shock force etc and I know these things will get fixed but may I suggest......

Battlefront, since CM1 you have gradually got to be more arrogant!

I am a loyal customer and I am offended,

  5. Just bought the game. Crashes in the set up phase EVERY TIME. On one occassion crashed computer totally. UAC switched on/off and playing as Administrator and not. Same result

    Any Ideas?

    Vista 32

    Intel Quad Q6600

    GeForce 285 on 182.5 Drivers

    4MB RAM

  6. Fantastic. The quick battle generator has renewed my interest in this game. I can remove half the trees and bushes so that I can see what goes on and I can set up all sorts of great scenarios to play single player. In time I hope for someone to develop some bigger towns (quite hard to do I think). Even if you cant get in the buildings, a long fight in a gradually crumbling town is good fun.

Bigger maps to give all the trucks and cars better use would be more fun as would replay, entering buildings and motars. And an easier map mod tool would be good....etc.

I applaud the uber patch. And I eagerly await the add-on. I am happy to pay. This game is going in the right direction. Thanks. Keep us all posted.

  7. I have a high regard for PC Gamer. I am a subscriber because I rate their overall balance.

They protect mr average against duff games and, it has to be said, they brought the excellent Combat Mission to my attention.

Over time one becomes tuned PC Gamers bias for "games" over "simulations" and speed over substance. They particularly love first person shooters (eg half life). These always bore me after 5 hours. They love Real Time Strategy (but unrealistic gamey ones where a tank has a health bar that can be recharged!).

Sadly, to Mr Average, TOW is a duff game. So PC Gamer got that right. What they miss is that TOW is a step forward for wargaming. Shame on PC Gamer for missing that because they normally applaud a new way!

To Combat Mission lovers...well might I suggest that we are all a bit bored and we do need a new way? First I loved the long slog of History Line on the Amiga. Then Combat Mission which I played by email for 2 years! Less CM2, then almost not at all on CM3... no real progression...same game with small tweaks.

Theatre of War however shows some real promise. Its a bit more personal, more gritty and we have a promised improvement and mission editor, soon? Develop it to the limit Battlefront and then move to a new graphics engine allowing deformable terrain etc. This is the future of WW2 wargaming.

I am not Mr Average gamer. I want a long tactical game, I want to get to know my troops, I want to be genuinely concerned when I throw them forward. I want to have to bring supplies to them, fuel and ammo and food. I want to be able to watch them dig in etc....In short I want an experience that goes beyond a short tactical challenge which has to be replayed to get it right. I want to loose engagements and fall back to fight another day.

Get going battlefront, you have a big opportunity and an army of Combat Mission customers waiting for such a product.Keep up the interest by developing TOW to its limit (we will pay for it)and get moving on Theatre of War 2. Supplies you can leave to TOW3 ;)

  8. Hi Sibairarius, sorry i have been away on business!

Think I have solved the problem. Virgin media comes with PC Guard which uses a program file called f-prot. This uses a "Heuristic" scan to detect suspicious trojans. I believe the PC Guard software to be out of date. Either wait for it to be up to date or do what i did.....cash out for a better antivirus system (I went for Panda at £42 There is now no problem!) I say this because the help on PC Guard is non existent. "susema" is also a PC Guard description so not easy to find on the net.

    Good Luck

  9. Yep. I bought it on "Steam"

I have a good tip....NEVER buy a new game at 11pm. It's excellent. Only one problem...respawning. It would be more scary if you had to wait longer to respawn. Folks would be a little more cautious I think. Still kept me up half the night ;)

    Cheers.

  10. As a long term player of Combat Mission series I have to say that by the time CM3 came out I was struggling to keep interest. Incidentally I almost always built my own maps on the editor and staged huge battles by email. These were always slow bogged down battles with exhausted troops and ammo running low smile.gif

I bought TOW hoping for something new. And I have to say I am delighted. This is a game with huge potential. In it's first release form it is great fun and very immersive. I often loose a battle because I am too busy down at eye level enjoying watching some doomed gun crew braving it out against the odds, bullets pinging all around. With a good sound set up this is very Private Ryan. The individual soldier stats make this even more immersive. Tank bail outs and jumping into vehicles under fire smile.gif is all very dramatic :D Switch all the graphics up full if you can and watch the action! It can be fun to loose ;)

I am hoping that someone will develop a user friendly map and scenario editor as per Combat Mission ASAP. First thing I would do is remove some trees (I can't see for them)and create more hills and details. I dont want to have to write code. I will use multiplayer and not AI. It's always going to be more fun that way.

If buildings could be developed I would be happy to have walls only or rooftops only or something....I hated trying to manage troops around buildings in CM.

This is a fantastic effort and well worthy of distribution by Battlefront. There are enough people out there smart enough to take the concept ever further as happens with any good game. Please developers, stick at it. This is a winner.
