  1. Also, the tank commander supposedly was knocking out German tanks in Stalingrad. I think he said he was 8 years old at the time. That would have made him pretty old for a lowly tank commander by most standards, though I do not know what the case actually was for TCs in Afghanistan.

27-29 years maximum if he was a sergeant and up to 47 years if he was an officer. Most likely 19-20 years old smile.gif
  2. DPolwarth do you drove this tanks from driver seat or just sat down in commander station?

Any guy who directly droves this tanks will say tha t you are wrong. T-34 you hardly can run with 50 kmph (on straight concrete road), when the T-72 easy makes 60 and smoothly speeds up smile.gif

T-72 also has 6 gears (T-34 only 5) and much easier in maneuring (thanks to "bortovie korobki peredach"). T-55 also has his own features...

Just pay some attention when you drive your babe smile.gif

BTW..How did you get that blacked out area around the driver's view? Is it standard in the full version or another mod you've done?

Look in configurator -> "Realism" -> "Real view from tank" (or somewhat like this) set to "Yes". Or simple set high level of realism
  4. Oops, my mistake, 1/2 way anyway. T-55 and T-62 do have human loaders. But it says here in my old M1 Tank Platoon Book (sourced from Janes defence) that the T-55/54 and T-62 still needed to set the turret direction and gun elevation to a specific setting to reload because of very cramped crew conditions.

However, maybe those traits have been worked out in later models like the T-55AM2 or fixed with foreign upgrade kits.

Yup! The T-54/55 is really simple in use tanks (first models designed in 1946-1947) and you shouldn't elevate barrel to reload gun. Well, I'm not pretty sure about latest models (designed in 1980s).

About loaders and autoloaders: you should remember that alive guy will get tired soon enough and couldn't support such fire rate as 3 sec for shot :( He must take an ammo (30-40 kg each round {I'm not sure about weight}) and put it in gun (and he must aware not lost his fingers "evil grin"). Still he need to remove empty shells (if any) and place it back on shelves/containers... I even don't say a word about British tanks with rifled-barrel guns and

    compound ammos...

Any of system (loader or autoloader) has it's merits and demerits. But AFAIK the development of tanks (at least in Western countries) is directed at creation of tank with crew of two men (driver and TC). Drive drives, TC finds targets, AI hits them, autoloader reloads the gun smile.gif

  5. OK, I think that I should tell more about hatches and their importance for your long and happy life :).

Example 1: you drive the tank with CLOSED hatches and receive the HEAT round (let's say in turret). Your crew will die quickly and painfully with very high probability (almost 100%) because of increased pressure.

Example 2: you drive the tank with OPENED hatches and receive the HEAT round (let's say in turret too). You could lost some good guys :-( BUT ONLY if he(they) were in the way of "hot stream". But their chance to survive is much better.

Of course opened hatches don't protect your engine or ammo load. Some disadvantages: if you get mortar mine/howitzer shell/MLRS missile on roof of turret it will lead to death of crew... But howitzer shell/MLRS missile on turret roof no good in any case :)

  6. It's commands for AI.

` - move to waypoint (driver)

    1 - stop (driver)

    2 - fire/hold fire (gunner)

    3 - scan/cease scan (all crew)

    4 - gun forward/back (gunner)

    5 - move forward (driver)

    6 - move back (driver)

    7 - move left (driver)

    8 - move right (driver)

9 - turn tank towards the target (driver)

    0 - hull down (driver)
