Here is a typical, world war 2 era appointment by rank for the United States army. Again, as stated earlier, officers of lower ranks than these often held these assignments due to combat attrition.
army group (lt. general, general)
army (lt. general)
corps (maj. general)
division (maj. general)
combat command of armored div. (brig. general)
regiment (colonel)
battalion (lt. colonel)
company (captain)
platoon (1st and 2nd Lt.)

CMBO question - How do you get FO's into position to direct accurate fire without getting them shot up, especially in limited visibility battles? Obviously it's much easier if you can start them hidden in covered terrain with a dominating view of the battlefield. But this often isn't possible during attacks or meeting engagements.
CMBO Small Gain should REALLY be SO small?

Instead of trying to defend all the bridges and fords, defend the building cluster which surrounds the objective flag. It offers the best cover and concealment on the map, and you know it is where the Germans will ultimately move towards.
Delay the armor with sharpshooters while you withdraw your forces to the buildings, but expect some casualties. Discover the anti-armor capabilities of the 50 cal. mg. Find a nice hulldown position position for the M8. Keep your other vehicles out of sight until the German armor has been destroyed.
