In negotiations, West agrees not to take Ukraine into NATO, but accepts into EU, and makes concrete security guarantees to in any case. UN peacekeepers in along border. Russia gets symbolic non-NATO status for Ukraine. No future invasion of Ukraine for Russia.

I believe you when you say you're from the UK beacuse you have no idea how the EU works

What this boils down to is the breaching force having four options for a defensive war like we're seeing now:

    1. Go around
    2. Go through
    3. Go over
    4. Go home (stop fighting)

Option 1 is probably non-existent or, if it does exist, not of practical value.

Option 2 is apparently no longer viable thanks to a combination of UAS and various PGMs.

These are the two options that traditional maneuver warfare promotes, whether it be NATO or Soviet based doctrine.  That leaves us the remaining two.

Option 3 used to be incorporated into maneuver warfare but, in the past few decades, has been largely ruled out as impractical due to the earliest forms of PGMs... heat seeking air defense missiles.  And like we're seeing now, concentration of mass (i.e. big aircraft with dozens of paras) was found to be too risky.  Even moderate concentrations of mass (i.e. helicopters with a dozen soldiers) seem to be too risky.

Option 4 is the only option right now that doesn't involve a lot of losses for little gain.

Thinking about traditional airborne ops in the context of our jetpack discussion, should we really be so surprised that ground based maneuver warfare has suffered so horribly at the hands of the combination of detection and PGMs?  Air and airborne force projection has been under strain from this combo for decades, to the point where helicopters are largely held back from the frontlines and airborne ground forces are largely restricted to SpecOps and rear logistics.

If somebody wants to search black cat in dark room, especially if realy no cat in this room, this is his right. For Eastern European countries, military aspect in their cultures always played important role in upbringing. I think, not a last role in "phenomenon" of fierce Ukrainian resistance played "military culture" memory with an attitude "I have an obligation to be defender of my land", different youth scout and paramilitary organisations, upbringing low-level leaders. Alas, contemporary western culture with it's negative aspects like "life for enjoying and consumption", globalization moods "Nations don't exist, I'm citizen of Universe", leftism, libertarianism etc significantly undermined nation readiness to fight. Now in Ukrainian society more and more we are hearing voices (and this is not only Russian PsyOps): "Why I have to go at the war! Only professionals must to go! I was born to enjoy a life, not to die on minefields! They havn't a right to force me to fight! This is violation of my human rights! If Russians come I will defend my family - we just relocate them to other country, but you closed borders for men, violating my basic human rights to choose a safe place for life!"

When about week ago was published a photos of daughter of marine, fallen in 2020 - three years ago, where she was 10 y.o with a portray of his father and today's photo, where she is 13 y.o with sniper rifle as a cadete of military college, huge number of "snowflakes" and "human right defenders" started to faint "OMG! Little girl with a weapon! It's unacceptable!" Maybe this is a reason why in EU so low level of people, who ready to fight with a wepon for their countries. If education system try to upbrings kids as "snowflakes in rose unicorn kingdom", keeping them from "unwanted stresses, violence, militarism, hard situations" etc. then even usual mountain trip with a tent without a bed and toilet turned out for many of them in dangerous challenge, not speaking of to readiness to engage with a war reality.

So, I'm for "golden mean clever militarism" in youth upbringing. This is a question of nation health and future stability of countries.

Percentage of Europeans Who Are Willing To Fight A War For Their Country

I wouldn't fight for my country if it was a  military dictatorship for example and at war with a democratic country.  In fact, I'd more likely fight against my country in order to return it to a democracy.

I didn't fight for the abstract concept of nationhood. But I DID choose to join the military (US Army) as a career. Because I love my friends and family, and being a soldier was my best way to serve THEM. When it actually came to war, I fought for the folks on my left and right. Nationhood sounds good as a thing to fight for, but there are very few people who actually do that.

All the power to you for doing what you thought was right but it doesn't change the fact that some people profited from it very handsomely

  5. Interview with Caesar, the commander of the Freedom of Russia Legion.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/08/anti-putin-forces-plan-fresh-attacks-inside-russia

interesting version on the P affair, which sounds quite plausible to me:

"He said the Wagner mercenary leader had originally intended to capture and remove Russia’s defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, and commander in chief, Valery Gerasimov, last month, when he began an armed uprising.

The FSB learned of Prigozhin’s intention and moved the pair from Rostov-on-Don, Russia’s southern district military command. After taking over the southern city without meeting resistance, Prigozhin “improvised” and sent an armoured column towards Moscow, Caesar said.

Caesar speculated that Prigozhin had so far escaped punishment after turning his armoured column back because he held kompromat or compromising material on Putin. “I don’t respect Prigozhin. He and Putin have the same values. Prigozhin is more charismatic and appeals to ultra-patriots who want to fight to the end. They think harsher methods will bring them victory. It’s not realistic.”

Another interesting point about the state of the army:

Sitting in a Kyiv cafe, he predicted the Putin regime would collapse by the end of 2024. It was now “cracking and unstable”. He said there was unhappiness within the Russian military, driven by the fact that many “conscienceless” soldiers from the provinces who joined up because they were broke had not been paid. “There’s a huge problem with money,” he said.

And finally, the very definition of a bully:

Caesar was predictably scathing about Putin, whom he described as a small and cowardly “criminal boy”, who tried to terrorise his adversaries into submission, but retreated whenever he was confronted by force.

I'm now fixated on the mine issue, so thank you for the detailed assessment strac-sap. The lack of systems to deal with the densities we are seeing the Russians use is an impetus for some quick changes. That, or clear the other side of the mine-fields completely. The Soviet army certainly understood their stopping power, so these mined areas are doing the work of entire battalions of missing Russian troops.

The majority of the mines we are seeing used in Ukraine seem to be fused to pressure-activated from above, exploding when something around 3-5lbs. (an insanely low number) presses upon it. If this weren't directly-applied pressure (which seems the most desirable method to demine) - How much (if any) pulsed air pressure from above a mine/mines would need to be exerted to fire off anything under a cone of something like an intense audio burst?

Traditional demining vehicles seem to slow in the new world of human mayhem. My cocktail-napkin demining rig would be 3 (or more) drones, each with some type of audio emitter, moving in tandem across a mined area to clear it. Something of this sort could solve the issue of most clearer mechanical damage, and would not really need any on-board armaments (aside from the audio emitter). Remote detonation from above also removes the need for terrain-conforming rollers. Drones have proven to be tough to knock out, and could be swarmed for big fields or areas that are under observed fire. It could also be ominous sounding as all get out. Or ridiculous, depending on soundtrack.

My 2 thoughts about the mines issue:

    1. Water cannons. Would they have enough pressure to trigger the fuse?

    2. Bypass the mines. Parachute drops, air insertion of SF. Would that work?

If the rumours about Wagner approaching Krasnodar are true, then soon Russia will only have one railway line to supply all their forces in Ukraine…

I’d say it’s time for the AFU to start HIMARSing the s*** out of Starobilsk. Then the whole Russian frontline in the south will be cut off.

remember the maxim: don't interrupt the enemy when it's making a mistake

    yes

and when you click on play does an error message come up about not finding the CM2 file?

Nope, it opens the menu screen with all the options available (solo game, internet game, etc)

  9. It says no cd found indeed. I bought my copy in Moscow, Russia, so God knows which version is it. The cover of the cd says Combat Mission2 and has the CDV logo, but the opening screen of the game says Combat Mission Barbarosa to Berlin. I tried to use both patchs (CDV and internet) but to no avail.

    Thanks for your help

  10. When I download the patch I am only allowed to play multiplayer, no single player. According to the trobleshooting guide I have to click in the shortcut/properties and then the compatibility tab, but there's no compatibility tab, only general and shortcut tabs. I am running Win Me

    Any help would be apreciated.

    Thanks
