  1. Does anyone else feel that the matilda tank is quite a super tank, at least in the early years, like a kv-2 or t-34 tank ?

my PzIII 50mm can't penetrate easily. A Platoon of Matildas are quite deadly indeed.

ps. sorry if this has been discussed previously.

  2. most entertaining.

i won't go into what i did here or what route i took, safe to say, it doesn't deviate from the earlier posts here, what is interesting are the new stuff i noticed:

    - troop movements in the open desert is quite hazardous! i had to creep/sneak my men among the bushes. What is tough is trying to position my HMGs/off board motars.

    - richochet city. alot less first time fatal penetration, but alot of non-damage hits. At first I thought the allies had crack tank platoons, but i found out they were just green/regulars.

    - M3 Grants die like fruit flies up close whilst the ATG in the trench took forever to kill. I reserve my comments on shermans *eyes rolled up*

    - my pow amerikans surrendered then in the next turn tried to run away, got caught and promptly surrendered agains. *sneaky*

    - dust storms is a nice touch, yet to read up on their effects on concealment.

overall, this scenario is bigger than CMBB tutorial, somewhat smaller than CMBO Chance Encounter but alot of skills needed than CE.

    Yes, I promptly pre-ordered the game smile.gif

  3. Roo:

whatcha mean, loosing a dozen german afvs in iron roadblock to a lone KV takes guts ?!

the way to play I.R. is to charge all your Pz towards the KV, and when that lone 251/1 finally reaches the KV, dismount your troops and throw molotovs, and route the KV....now that takes Guts. And then actually lose all the men when they try to approach the flag. Real Guts. Available at your nearest 7-11.

I used to beat my regular PBEM friend, 2:1, like 20: 10 games, in CMBO. In CMBB as Russians, it has been quite the opposite, currently at 9:6(me). And those six wins was becoz i played Germans! 4Managing the Russians has been a nitemare, i think it's the language, they doan speak Chinese, and I doan understand russian.

  4. taken from the site:

"A free gallery of 50 photographs taken at the Karelian Front in the period from July 1941 to November 1944. The gallery is available in the Internet as a part of The Russian Battlefiald website. Please notice, the gallery is for advertising and introducing purposes and will not be updated!"

BTW, anyone know whether smokescreen was used extensively by the russians ? I was led to believe it wasn't at all common.

  5. JasonC,

Thanks for the reply. Never really considered the Pioneer troops before. Something to experiment with now.

To summarize some of the comments made above, Pre-April 1942, good AT would be:

    * ATGs

    * Pioneers (if you can get close enuff)

    * BT-7s

    * Other infantry ATs like TH, AMP, Mines

Will try to work out a 1941 Russian Force mix against Axis Combined Arms Meeting Engagement, 300, 500 points. And post results.

    cheers!

  6. hi all,

    Thanks for all your comments.

I played several Meeting Engagement last nite (42 to 43) to simulate the challenge of allied fighting superior Axis tanks without any T-34 or KVs.

I resisted buying more AFVs and instead concentrated on buying more Anti-tank weapons.

I limited myself to 2 green T-70 whilst the rest were allocated either Anti-tank weapons (atg, ampulomet, tank hunters, etc) plus one green platoon. For the Germans, I chose 1xStuG, 1xPz38(a), 1xPzIV shortnose + 1 Platoon. Points were 300 (Allied) vs. 500+ (Axis).

At this level, alot of hidding, crawling and positioning needed, and all the teams (tanks, troops, support) must work together.

I had mixed results with the ampulomets, generally good but unreliable. The Tank Hunter was a challenge to stay alive up close to the enemy tanks. The T-70 is very good but has to be flank/rear against the StuG/PzIV.

In Another game same Allied configuration, my amulomets disabled a Tiger while my T-70s rushed from the Rear and pinged the Tiger to death.

    Any suggestion for a pre-april 42 equilvalent of the T-70 ? maybe a BT-7 series ?

  7. Just played a homemade scenario:

    April 1942

4x Regular Long nose StuG total under 310 points

    1 x T-70 Tank Platoon + 3 additional T-70 total 308 points.

Did a wide flank with the 3 additional t-70s while the platoon did a frontal charge. 2 Turns later all the StuGs were dead with the loss of 2 x T-70s.

Did a search on the forum for T-70, and this thread answered all the questions on the T-70.

Although the original JasonC post was in Jan, I just discovered the T-70 this evening and I must say it is quite refreshing from the t-26, BTs, I have been playing.

  8. Hi, I have a question, assuming you are playing a combined arms scenario against a human opponent, how important is Armor to you ? Do you feel the game is lost once you lose your armor ?

Case in Point, CMBB version of Chance Encounter. Do you surrender if all your T-34s are lost, while the opponent's StuGs are still alive and kicking ?

In other words, how much of the game is "lost" if you lose all your armor ?

The reason I ask this question is because assuming I use the tank rules from SCIPIO or Redwolf and apply to pre-1942, the Russians (t-26, BTs)really do not stand a chance against the III, IVs or even the Somua tank. That being the case, does it mean, it would be better to buy Russian ATGs & Tank Hunters than AFVs in pre-1942 ?

I tried several homemade scenarios over the week-end, 1941 Oct Axis attack with 10 x III & IVs and Russians with only 5xATRs, 5xSShooters, 5xFT, 5xTHunters, 3 xAnti-tank Mine, 3xRoadBlock. No ATG, no armor. the points came to 900 (axis) vs 500 (Allied). I won the game but I suspect that this works only under pure armor and only in Defense. If it were Axis Combined Arms and a Meeting Engagement, I do not think the russians would stand a chance.

So back to the original question, how do you fight in 1941 as Russians without T-34s/KVs ?

  9. it gets worse ! slowly but surely, Play by Email will creep into your daily work schedule, and you will find yourself playing a turn or two during work and the rest of the time, sketching out possible tactics to your current scenarios.

Worse still, your kids (if you have any) will start comparing Tiger tanks against the Wolferines. Your wife, at some stage will either resign to the fact that playing CMBO is better than hanging out at the pub and leave you alone OR worse, she will try to limit your time at the computer like what she does to the kids....

of coss, if you are retired, then CMBO is made for you!

you, sir, have been assimilated! Welcome to the Borg!
