  1. Downloaded, setup & running.

    Looks fantastic!

Question: If you (well, if I) click on "Battles" I see 5 entries for each of two MONSTER "Master" maps (Orsha & Radzymin). Are these supposed to be included in the build? They have no units on them (the '1' map of each, anyway), and take a loooong time to load.

My bet is these are (like they say) “master maps” that the BF guys used sections of for other scenarios. Not sure why they are showing up in the Battles screen, or if they even meant to distribute them to the Gen. Public.

    Curious.

  2. was it just a planning fubar that that the navy didn't put some craters on the beach?

The main reason (well, according to a show I saw last night about 6 June) that the bombers didn't put craters on the beach (or KO any of the beach fortifications) was due to the heavy overcast -- which in turn caused the Navy to request that the bombers hold their bomb loads just a wee bit longer, just to be absolutely sure they were over land and not over the invasion fleet. Naturally, holding the load for just a few seconds longer when you're travelling a hundred+ MPH means being a big more off target, and all bombs well inland.

  3. CMx2 is a different game. Nothing has been removed or changed, unless you are comparing to CMSF...

No? Can you assign infantry units (such as a squad, or even half squad) to "ride" on the back of a (non-light) tank? I know I could do that in CMBB, but I sure can't figure out how to do it in CMBN. Maybe it's just me, but I've asked around & a few others can't seem to find that, and I don't see it mentioned in the manual. Am I missing something? I just can't understand why this realistic feature of previous CM games has been dropped (inadvertently????) in the new & (otherwise) wonderfully improved CMBN. Maybe this has been discussed here on the forum, but I looked & could not find it. Also could not find a "search" feature (sorry; I don't get up here as much as I used to).

I've been enjoying the game since getting downloading it, and enjoying the manual since it arrived. Wonderful graphics, nicely-done maps, great modeling. Love the artillery/air support programming, and almost everything else.

One other minor gripe: load times of maps. Tiny & small ones take 2+ minutes; a congested Medium one took over 8 minutes. Kind of a pain having to wait for maps to load, esp. when playing a lot of PBEM games, mostly. Ah well... gives me time to digest more of the manual. (oh yeah, I also don't care for the brown type on tinted pages... definitely hard to read in low light).

    But, overall -- A+

  4. OK, MD. I guess I'll try almost anything once (at least if it's not life threatening! ;)

Send me a setup that's not too involved (not sure how long I'm gonna wanna play a no-FOW game, tho).

BTW, just for the record, I'm an "EFOW" kind'a guy. I'm surprized to see so many that prefer FFOW over EFOW. Oh well, "to each his own" they say. I'll probably prefer NFOW after this next game ...not!

  5. According to the Advanced Squad Leader notes for the Churchill AVRE it was indeed intended for "bunker busting". To wit, "The Dieppe raid in 1942 emphasized the sappers' need for some kind of armored vehicle to assist with the demolition of obstacles while under fire. the Chruchill was chosen for this because of its roomy interior and the large hatches on the sides of the hull. In this role it was designated the Armoured Vehicle, Royal Engineer -- or AVRE. Churchill III and IV were used for the conversion, with applique armor added to increase their survivability." ...and so on.

Personally, I'd like to see each FO rated for "x" number of rounds of each available ammunition type; e.g., 40 smoke, 160 HE. I mean, after all, the game already keeps track of each infantry and armor unit's ammunition type, and you already specify whether you want smoke or HE fired.

Firing all rounds available (200, frequently, for 81/82 mm mortars) as smoke, to me, smells suspiciously "gamey". ...and I confess I've been guilty of such usage numerous times -- though, honestly, I'd not really thought about it much before; when I'm given (or buy) 81mm FOs, I consider them my smoke screen producers! Against a dug in enemy, it's frequently hard (for me, anyway) to resist using all rounds as smoke to cover the advance of my vulnerable units.

Moral: It would be nice if this detail were attended to, if not in a patch for CMBO/BB/AK, then in the next iteration of the game system.

    Just my 2cents.

This reminds me of an occurance when playing CMAK demo's "Line of Defense": I was surprised to see a Panzershreck penetration of a Stuart that didn't kill the bugger.

I would assume it's not "gamey" at all. Who's to say there wasn't a stock of smoke rounds ready for that offensive/defensive action?

Certainly this could be true for a pre-planned attack.

Off topic, prompted by your sig: very nice job on the GCACW series maps. Works of art.
Thanks. As you probably know, I only did the maps for the first 2 or 3 games in the series. Kurt Miller did the maps for the last games. It was always a pleasure to work with Joe Balkoski on those games.
  9. Situation: Assume you've got an 81mm Btln Mortar FO, with (say) 200 rounds of ammo, and another FO with access to (say) 80 rounds of 105.

Question: Just how "gamey" is it if you use all (or almost all) 200 rounds of the 81mm to drop smoke? Would a typical btln-level mortar battery have had access to 200 smoke rounds? If you think the battle size/type is pertinent to this, assume you're attacking in a 1500-pt "attack/defend" QB.

    Your thoughts are humbly solicited.

  10. I've never bothered to stop and count how many people I've "sold" the CM game to (co-workers, associates, friends, etc.) by turning them onto the BF website & encouraging them to give the CM demo a spin and/or buy the CM game(s) -- but it's probably well over 3 dozen. I've been in the gaming business (board, now computer) now for well over 20 years, and I've never been so inclined to "sell" any other such game.

I do it because I love it, I guess.

Bingo and Right On. And one of the things that makes it a great game are all of the extremely talented people involved, from the designers/programmers, to the testers, to all the players and participants of this forum. Oh, and the game is realistic, plays intuitively, and looks good too! :D

    Enjoy!

  12. True sadness. Upon inserting my brand new CMAK CD into my CD-ROM drive, the autorun attempts to run, but I instantly get the following message,

The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the Program.

I'm heartbroken and crestfallen -- among other things. Knowing there's more than one way to kill a dog than to choke him on butter, however, I copied all the files off the CD into a TEMP folder on my HD, and tried to then run the massive setup.exe file from there. They copied successfully, but, double-clicking the EXE file produced...

    The same sad message.

So, what exactly is the scoop with getting a new game? Must I send the entire package back to Battlefront, or need I return only the CD (i.e., so I keep the manual and slobber over it?).

Lastly, what's the full snail-mailing address it needs to be returned to? Unfortunately, the beloved game arrived at work, and the Priority Mail envelope it came in has probably been thrown out with the trash!

    Anguished...
