Dont think it was called the Owen-Stanley (thats a range of mountains in New Guinea), just the Owen.
When I did my nat service we were still equiped with them and yes they were a great gun. Our sargents told us they would fire under water, a slight exaggeration I think...

Osprey have a good book out called "Ostfront, Hitlers War on Russia 1941-5" by Charles Winchester. A new one (well, last year) with up to date facts by someone with no axe to grind. I found it a good read.

Its still there for me (1 Mar about 0200Z). I have been frantically downloading all the mods "I meant to get someday", so I guess I have added to Manx worries.

I have all of Talonsofts Nap games plus many of the addon battles available on the web. Most people just use the system to play each other, it is very good for that. But your right the AI sucks.
Looks like you have a market waiting, BTS...

The british historian Alan Clark (Purnells History of the Second World War) reckons that most judges now agree that Hitlers no retreat order in the Winter of 41/42 saved the day for the German Army. In retrospect Kluge's Chief of Staff wrote;
"Hitlers fanatical order that the troops must hold regardless. in every position and in the most impossible circumstances was undoubtedly correct. Hitler realised instinctively that any retreat across the snow and ice must, within a few days lead to the dissolution of the front and that if this happened the Wehrmacht wouls suffer the same fate that had befallen the 'Grande Armee'."
General von Tippelskirch went even further , rating it "Hitlers one great achievement".
Thr trouble was Hilter carried that policy on right on to the end of the war in circumstances when it was disastrous.
There were a lot of self serving biog's published by German Generals after the war that blamed Hitlers interference for every mistake, including their own. Manstein and Guderian in particular.

On the subject of casualties;
2.5% of the British population was killed or injured in WWII.
American casualties were 0.6%.
Russian casualities were 25% (yes, twenty five percent). The figure was closer to 30 mill than 20 million.

Yes it will run Mac, I did so on a very similar machine for six months before I saw the light and brought a new machine. Just stick to the small scenarios and be patient with the "computer thinking" etc. Keep the options low of course. Get a new machine as soon as you can and you will realise what you are missing, with CM and other games.

I have a copy of FM 17-12 "Tank Gunnery" that I picked up in a secondhand bookshop (here in Australia) years ago. Good stuff although a bit modern (1964) for WWII. Well written for an Army manual, not all were !!.

I tried the 7.17 drivers but struck trouble with some of my flight sims. Went back to the Asus drivers (I like the desktop thing anyway) and never looked back. I guess we always have this desire for the latest (when free !!) but to be honest I didnt need faster fps even on CFS2 etc.

A bit dissapointed at that ambush though..I really had him cold.....

That when I play a scenario (forget the name but about Whittmans last hours) as the Germans my 4 Tigers are wiped out in the first 2 turns. When I play as the British all my Shermans go almost as fast, even when I set up an elaborate ambush that lets me put 2 shells into a Tiger, from the side, from 20 yards away (they bounced off and he killed me with his first shot)
Mutter..mutter..mutter.

I wonder does the AI take account of how many vehicles had used a road before deciding wether the next heavy vehicle should bog ?. In good weather I had a PZVI bog on an uphill road that had had a fair amount of traffic, including another PZVI. It seems logical but I don't know wether the game is that clever.

Well mine cost $A88 altogether, took 16 days to get here. A bargain AFAIK.
Like the man said find a friend with visa or get a card yourself. You dont have to use it much, cancel it after you get the game if you want.

Interesting Topic
Actually the Germans did a wargame on the invasion of Russia prior to the event. They found, from the Wargame, that they would almost certainly run out of supplies before they reached the Dnieper. They ignored this but it was pretty nearly correct. Of course the Game could not program in Hitler !!.
I am a fan of Trotter, but rarely buy the mag these days because of the juvenile nature of the rest of it. The local (OZ) mag is even worse...
