I just wanted to get a few PBEMs going and thought I would drop a line here, if it is not a problem. If it is let me know and I will stop.
P.S. What a great game!

DEF BUNGIS I can't remember where I got the experimental drivers at but if you want I can post them on a web site or email them directly to you, zipped up. Let me know.
Good News! I bought a new Mainboard and CPU. Installed everything and loaded CM. Everything went perfect, had my first full graphics game! YEAHOO!

http://cgi.s3planet.force9.co.uk/cgi-bin/sml?sections/files/savage4.sml
This the web site that seems to have the most info on the latest driver/BIOS updates for the S3 chipset cards.
-
Sometimes I have even noticed that some Mainboard manufacturers like to put jumpers on the board that control the built-in products. If you have a manual take a look in there, otherwise try their web site. My suggestion would to disable the on-board video.

I was using the Creative Savage4 32mb OEM (S3 Chipset) video card. Then I purchased the VooDoo2 12 PCI Accelerator card for a Permidia2 8mb AGP to put in my system. But I still have lockups, with either card! It really is starting to piss me off!
I guess I should try different drivers from www.driverguide.com

Actually I get fog and transparent buildings using my Voodoo2 1000 accelerator card. I also get fog and transparent things using the savage4 card by itself. My problem is I get lockups all the freakin time!
-
I did a complete format and reinstalled win98 se. Have had very little lockups since then. I am using Mr F's S3 SavageGlide Drivers with no hiccups. Also I have been using DirectX6.1a instead of 7. I continue to test out the system though.
Thanks again for all the help
-
I have tried soo many different drivers and setups now I have gray hair! I even got lockups when I tried playing 640x480 with no Direct3d and no DirectDraw. I just am at a complete loss and will be reinstalling my system today or tomorrow
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-
Well, I get the game to work finally after disabling my direct3d hardware aceleration and making a few other tweaks but then the game plays REALLY slow. At least I can play now! I will keep tweakin things though.
It will work some day
-
I know when it happens to me I can usually press ESC to exit to the desktop. My mouse still works along with the sound.
As far as a solution for your problem try this web site http://www.reactorcritical.com/
they have some useful info about latest drivers and such
-
My mouse installed is a generic PS/2 mouse via windows.
-
I'll try that and get back to you. Thanks for the suggestion
-
I still have problems with or without the sound installed. I switched the graphics card for an ATI. It still doesn't run, but now I can get more than 5 mins of play before the game freezes. When I say the game freezes, I mean the mouse continues to work and move just game stops responding.
I can hit ESC to exit to desktop with no errors!

I have tried that too to no avail as well!
Nothing seems to work!
-
CRAP!!! I pulled out the sound card, made sure all the drivers were gone and still I have the game locking up on me!
Any suggestions?
System Configuration:
AMD K-6 333 o/c to 350
128mb RAM
Creative Savage4 32mb video w/latest drivers
Matsonic ALI aladdin Super7 w/latest drivers
Realtek 10mb network card w/latest drivers
HP 8x4x32 CDRW
Creative 36x CD
I have tried tweaked drivers, regular drivers from various web sites. They all have the same result-lock-up with ESC being my only exit to the desktop with no error messages. WTF?
-
Well, I still have lock-ups with CM only. I think maybe I need to remove the sound card and try that. I have tried all of the drivers at the S3 (thanks Scott) web site to no avail. I would really love to play the game~ !
I have a yamaha opl3 sound card that may be the cause after all. I post my results afterwards. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it
-
I too am beginning to think the culprit may indeed be the sound card after all. DirectX shows 2 drivers not certified by MS. 1 from the Yamaha sound card and 1 from the Savage4 video card. I wonder...
-
Scott you are lucky! My savage4 card runs great in everything but CM as well, except that when I play CM I can play 5mins to 1 hour then the game freezes (with no errors) forcing me to hit escape.
Then the game just closes and puts me back on my desktop, no errors messages. I have tried creative's new drivers, updated my system hardware drivers to no avail.
-
I too am having lock-ups but only in the game requiring me to hit escape to exit to the desktop, with no error messages.
I have a yamaha sound card. I was wondering if maybe the culprit is the sound card after all.
