1. Dear Seanachai,

I hate myself for loving you. I think that's bad, but maybe its good. Am I going in the wrong direction? Would I like myself if I hated you?

Also, I am on good terms with my Aunt in Gnome, Alaska, and some of the uber-Finns have laughed at me. Is any of that good?

On a complete side note, what do you think about using Air Supply lyrics as wedding vows?

And finally, Madmatt once referred to Plutonian Butt-Monkeys. I'd like one of those -- can you help?

    Regards,

    Olduvai

Er, no. Speakeasy was my old ISP; I had to abandon them when I went broadband and dsl wasn't available. Thanks for reminding me to change my profile information, tho!

  3. Not to belittle BFC in anyway, but it seems to be a wholly appropriate title of any future novel that might discuss the CM phenomenon or experience would of course be, "What is Peng?" (the cover of alleged novel could be covered in smilies  )

Surely there are some profound peng koans that might be shared by those regularly afflicted by The Thread.

    To misquote a regular here:

It's a mutha-beautiful thread, and its gonna be there!

(this post should in no way imply that I am a participant in the cesspool)

  4. To Mike, My Section II Opponents, and Wild Bill Wilder and His Scenario Team:

It is with great regret that I must withdraw from the Rumblings of War tournament. Some of my earlier opponents may be aware of the family tragedy that struck my significant other earlier in the year. Unfortunately, the repercussions of that event continue to unfold, and my girlfriend must return to her home so that she can care for and provide support for her mother. Kim is the woman I love and the one I want to spend my life with, so it was an easy decision for me to decide to accompany her to Alaska.

Unfortunately, given the confluence of the holidays, the speed of which these latest events have unfolded, the support that my girlfriend and I will need to provide (and receive!), and finally the great unknown of the Alaska wilderness make my return to the internet, the battlefront board, and pbem CM play unpredictable. Though it is no great thing I do for my opponents or inevitable replacement, all things considered, withdrawing from the tournament seemed the best thing to do. I have discussed it with Mike / Treeburst155, and he indicated that a replacement would be found for my remaining two games.

So I would like to say some thank you's and apologies before I sign out of the tournament. First the thank you's.

A big, huge, massive Thank You to Mike for hosting this tournament (and for having the foresight to see that problems such as mine would arise). A similar thank you to Wild Bill and his scenario team. These games of CM have been some of the best gaming experiences of my life, and I am sure that when the scenarios are released to the general public, the kudos will be a-flowin'. Thank you to my Section II opponents, some of which were forced to wait patiently through the first phase of my crisis. To a man you were understanding, supportive, gentleman, and most of all -- incredibly worthy opponents. A special thanks to Tom / TGHCGN@aol.com for his excellent command of the german forces arrayed against me in our game, and especially for his support which touched my girlfriend and I in a deep and profound way. Tom, knowing you and your wife were praying for us was a gift and beacon neither Kim nor I shall ever forget.

And now for the apologies. First and foremost, I apologize to my replacement whoever he/she may be, as I know it is never as satisifying to join a battle in process than develop your own plan. I hope that you are able to gain some satisfaction from the play that I have left you. I would also like to apologize to CDIC and John Kettler, who's two games I am forced to abandon. As my other opponents, you are both gentlemen and worthy opponents, and it is been my pleasure and honor to meet you on the virtual battlefield. And finally, a general apology to Mike, Wild Bill and his Team, and my section II opponents, for I will not be able to accomplish my oft-threatened and now never delivered AAR's. I am a profound procrastinator, and I am very sorry that all of you end up suffering for my laziness.

And so, without further ado, I will leave with the words of some american guy who I am sure will eventually make an appearance in the CM world, probably CM IV or CM V -- "I shall return."

I hope to see you all here when I do.

    Regards,

    "Olduvai" George

I confess to NOT being one of these good people -- yet. Though I cannot fully understand why Mr. Wild hates me with such passion ;) , I do intend to get AAR's out, just as soon as I can figure out how to spin my "successes."

Close, it's a hunt command up the hill, stopping so that the gun clears the crest of the hill and has LOS. In the same turn a reverse order is issued after the hunt. It works like this. The tank hunts up the hill. Because it will hunt, it will engage targets as soon as it has LOS. Then after the hunt order is completed, it will reverse back down into cover.

Thanks for the reply and clarification. Kanonier Reichmann asks a good question, too -- will the hunt command allow for just one shot or will the afv continue to engage any and all targets it sees until destroys? I understand that micromanagement of individual assets is not the real intent of CM, but I am interested to know if there is an effective way to do the pop and shoot.

If I've got a choice between a Puma or a Tiger to use for pop up shots from behind a hill, I'd have to go with the Puma. It can leap forward, shoot once, then race back way before most other tanks can traverse, aim, and fire.

How does this work? Give a fire order while your afv is behind the hill, order it over the hill, then a pause command, and then order it back behind cover? Does this work? i'm an idiot for not trying. . .

  8. I do not love hamsters; I merely recognize that they are deserving of more respect than they are shown by many on this board.

When the Japanese defeated the German horde at Dunkirk to end the American Revolution, can you name any rodents other than hamsters that were there?

When Rasputin and the other Commmunists were forced onto the Long March to Australia, what furry, fun-loving creature did they select as travelling companions?

When the bubonic plague savaged the Arctic after World War II and caused the American "baby-boom" generation, what noble little animal stepped forward to sacrifice themselves in the name of birth control?

When Lichtenstein first sent life into orbit around this world, what brave rodent was used (hint: one of them was named Sputnik)?

After the end of the Cold War, when the Viking Norsemen poured out of sweltering Madagascar to savage the known world, what small fierce domesticated pet waved on their banners?

Answer these questions my friends, and you shall know why the hamster is a rodent to be honored, not ridiculed.

  9. I continue to be shocked and appalled at the constant denigration of hamsters on this site. Anyone with half a brain recognizes the dominance of hamsters and only a fool could question their bravery. Who here has not been told a story of hamster contribution? Who among us have not lamented the fate of the naked mole rat? I'm sure we are all acquainted with the history of Wisconsin, that great American state. Do I need to bring up Rikitikitavi? Sure, he was a mongoose (which I don't think is a rodent) -- but he _knew_ a lot of hamsters!

I do not claim to speak for hamsterdom or any specific hamster-type, but I do speak the truth. Be warned, ye of little-hamster-faith, the day shall come when cross the looming shadow of a hamster. And then, my friend, you shall know fear!
