  1. I have found that it is necessary to give the Allies a +50% modifier to even the odds when the Allies are doing an "attack" or "assault".

The quick battle generator generally gives equal equipment and the dug in defender has the terrain advantage, so the attacker should have at least a 2 to 1 material advantage. I always play the attack or assault scenarios giving the attacker a +50 material advantage at least.

  2. OK, now that MadMatt has fully enlightened us on mortar and artillery (I'll send you the link to his recent post if you can't find by searching) usage in CM, I am ready to post my question.

Mortars in CM are required to have LOS either themselves or by their HQ to the target location in order to fire at that location (unless firing on the predetermined fire target and not moving since setup). I believe that this is totally unrealistic and ahistorical. With this feature in place, any infantry unit can make itself immune to attack by mortar fire by simply hiding behind a hill, trees or building out of LOS of the enemy. This is totally unrealistic, since mortar fire was typically used in an indirect fire mode to hit troops (and terrain where enemy troops were suspected to be) that couldn't be seen directly. If the enemy, or the ground where enemy is suspected to be, were visible (i.e. in LOS), then it would have been (and would be) attacked by direct fire from conventional weapons!

Steve, Charles, I would like you change this in the 1.02 patch to allow mortars in C&C with their HQ to be able to indirect fire to any location on the map (in range) regardless of whether it is in LOS of the HQ or not. Each HQ leader had a map of the battlefield and could direct the mortar team to fire, for example one hundred yards directly ahead, etc, even to terrain he couldn't directly observe where he suspect enemy troops may be located.

    Thanks for a great game,

    Rob C.

  3. I played the tutorial for the first time as the allies at +50%. I got three tanks and advanced them up the middle road in a line formation with overwatch. When his firt tank appeared, I nailed it. When the other one showed he got one of mine but the other two finished him. My remaining tanks advanced far enough to see his troops in the woods, whereupon I pounded him with mortar fire. As his panicked troops got up to run, I nailed them with my tank machine guns. Meanwhile, my entire force of infantry of 2 or 3 platoons had snuck around his right flank. They rushed the German position just as the second mortar barrage had finished and simultaneous with the advance of my tanks over the remaining frontal distance. Needless to say, the axis remaining infantry were slaughtered as they ran in panic from their positions. I think my victory was something like 95 to 5.

    Great fun. Heheheheh.

Congrats to BTS for a great, great game.

PS. I did not fare nearly so well in the other scenarios I have played so far. smile.gif

  4. Came in todays mail. Delivered around noon. I live in central Michigan, pre-ordered in late May of 2000. No poster (but I didn't expect one).

    Off to rampage through Europe.

    Hehehehehe.

  5. Help! I keep driving my tanks into mud and getting bogged down. I can't see the mud on the map to avoid it. Anybody know how to see/know where the mud is and avoid it?

Or is this a random chance event when driving on all non-road terrain and there is always some chance of getting stuck?

    Thanks,

    Rob C.

  6. Wesreidau,

In woods I advance infantry as follows: half the force in front, the other half close behind, but not too close. The leading units always advance crawling. When the enemy is contacted, lead units stop, hiding, and the rest catch up, crawling. When all are together, all advance crawling. I then try to bring a superior force in contact with the enemy.

Once the enemy has been found, I try to flank him, always crawling. If he is far enough away, I try to hit him with mortar fire before advancing.

I never use sneak or move in woods. Its suicidal.

    Good Luck,

    Rob C.

  7. Fang,

This is why I have 3 computers, any one of which could be used to play CM on.

PS. You might consider switching to a more reliable computer type/supplier. I have a Compaq, one Dell and one AST. And I like all three.

  8. Regardless of nationality, tanks should never be driven near buidlings or woods (within range infantry AT weapons) where infantry may be hidden. Either pre-scout the positions you are about to approach with infantry or approach with massive suppresive fire and don't linger. If you must approach buildings or woods, a good policy is to approach, fire and reverse quickly out of AT weapon range until it can be definitively established that no enemy infantry are present there.

Resist the temptation to bring tanks in close to buildings or woods. Stand off and blast the woods or building first to try and flush out any possible ambushing infantry.

  9. I was playing CE last night as the Axis with a 150% advantage over the Amis. I got 5 Stugs. Three advanced, took hull down positions and took out 5 shermans to only one loss. This is exactly opposite of what usually happens when I play the Amis. When I am the Amis, my 3 or 5 Shermans usually take out the German Stugs with few losses.

Does the material balance setting also affect the chance of a hit calculations? I didn't think it did.

It may be that I just use the Stugs better than the AI.

  10. This has been discussed before, but I would like to add my 2 cents worth. In patch 1.02 I would like to see:

    1. Waypoints for groups

    2. A save group feature, where you could recall the group (and its formation) with a hotkey such as ctrl 1 or equivalent

    Thanks,

  11. I like the idea of independent development of CM, but in regards to marketing (I believe I have a stake in this as a purchaser of the game and one who hopes to enjoy future versions and derivatives of it), I think you ought to put simple one-page adds in the major computer game magazines and attempt to distribute the game in major national stores such as electronic boutique as well as the internet computer game resellers. I think you would make a lot more money, which would be good for all of us.

My cable modem at home is even faster than my T1 line at work.
