  1. Never say never in CM. Even on shots with a "kill-none" chance, there is still a very small chance of penetration. Did the tank rotate at all during the turn? If the zooks did not have perfect right-angle shots at the beginning of the turn and then the tank rotated so they did, that would substantially increase the chance of a kill.

And yes, there was a silm chance that a zook could kill a tiger in real live, assuming you had a perfect shot to hit the side or rear armor at a right angle, and that you were stupid enough to try in the first place. It didn't happen often, though.

It has to do with the creation process of CM. When the scheduled relase date of CM approached, BTS was not able to include TCP/IP mode. They polled us, and the majority of people on this forum said that they would rather have the code for TCP patched in than to have the release date delayed. When the code for TCP/IP was patched in with the 1.1 version, BTS thoughtfully included the ability to play a TCP game with only one CD.
  3. To keep the AI from surrendering, just put a tank in an unused corner of the map, surrounded by a good thick layer of trees so it can't shoot out. That way the AI will always have a unit on the map.

Oh, and don't forget a few grounds crewmen that you can pelt with balls if the holes are too hard to hit.

  4. You're assuming that the gunner knows where his shots are landing, and that he knows whether they are hitting their target. It's going to be very hard to see where a shell is impacting from 1000m away, especially with smoke and dust churned up by the enemy tank.

In addition, tanks had to estimate the range precisley or they would miss for sure, and WWII era rangefinders were nowhere near as good as the ones today. Again, very difficult to do under combat conditions.

I agree that the 88mm is undermodeled in CMBO, but only because optics are modeled. But there's already a thread going on this subject.

  5. You'll really have to find your own style. Some people prefer using 88s or 17lbers and going for the long shot, while I prefer 57mms/6lbers, where you have to hold fire until the enemy gets very close. In any case, AT guns by themselves are not an effective antitank defense, you'll need to back them up with zooks and preferably mobile tank killers as well.

Keep in mind that 40mm and 37mm AA are generally considered to be gamey, so you may wish to ask your opponent before using them in PBEMs.

another fact for game-balance is, that the tanks dont hit with first shot at 1000m. if that would be so, the armor of esp. panther or tiger 1 were helpful. in reality, you have at 1000m a hitchance of around 99% with green-units, at 2000m nearly every shot of regular units hits his target. so the 88-FlaK had a hitchance of around 60% at 4000m.

    "it`s ronson`s day"

Nope, BTS never sacrificed historical reality for gameplay in either CM title. An example to prove this would be the Sherman Jumbo. In the first couple versions it had much thicker armor than in 1.12. When research proved that CM was not matching up with reality, BTS took the time and effort to change the Jumbo, even though this made the game less balanced since it cost the allies one of their two ubertanks.

Can you give a source to back up your claim that tanks in WWII nearly always hit their target at 1000m? Again, BTS is trying to be realistic here.

Michael, now that you mention it I remember cranking a quad-40 turret on the USS North Carolina when I was about 9. Even then I could move the thing, but not very fast. Of course, on a battleship you have plenty of room to add counterweights and redesign the turret so it is balanced and cranks easier, while a tank turret is much more limited in its design.

The words in that one are too big. Snipe, try this one, it should be at about your level.

Edit: You'd think that after three years on this forum I would be able to understand UBB at a level slightly above that of a fozzled monkey.

  8. There are a couple of options for finding the answers to your questions. First, there is an FAQ thread floating around somewhere. Do a search for "FAQ" and you will be able to find it. Second, you can do a search for specific topics. Most things have already been discussed, so by searching, you don't have to ask us. Third, go ahead and ask if you want. We understand your situation, and we promise not to make fun of you or laugh. I'll answer if I can, and someone else will otherwise.

Eventually, you have to continually improve just to keep up.

Correct. And once they've downplayed their wins, the best players will be sure to brag about their genius strategy and their opponent's ineptitude to anyone who will listen. If they lost, good players will analyze their defeat, learn from their mistakes, and then publically accuse their opponent of gaminess/cheating/bad setups/wasting good oxygen.

At least, that's how Soddball and I fight, since we both learned PBEMing skills from Antithicess State University. Speaking of whom, he's a gamey little weasel, since he hasn't accepted my challenge either.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the game he sent me was "random." If I'd known the conditions I wouldn't be complaining.
