  1. Well let me tell that I absolutely love 6.50 I used to run 5.32 for a long long time. I couldn't get 6.18, 6.31 to run well on my Win2K. After a rebooted a few times with the 6.18 or 6.31 my computer would freeze all the time right before the longin screen. This is not the case with 6.50. Everything works well including games...

Now if BTS would fix the flickering for Win2K I would be in heaven...

  2. Actually my problem seems to be with palette. Certain colors are flashing meaning switching between white and black. And yes I'm having problem with scenario text descriptions as well. After first battle it looks all messed up, like camouflaged or something. From my point of view its either the bitmaps are a bit corrupted (only some of them) or the code is messed up. Did anyone speak to BTS about this ?

  3. Is this damn flickering ever going to be fixed for Win2k ??? I kind of thought that it is my Video Driver or Directx7 not being implemented well in win2k. Was I wrong, all my other games work great, Falcon 4, WW2F, Talonsoft wargames , Close Combat series all works well. With Directx8 I would say things are even better than with Dx7 but I just don't understand why BTS doesn't look at the code and fix CM for Win2k. It's kind of hard to get into CM since after first battle the flickering gets really bad...at this point I removed CM from my computer since I only have Win2K. Can you with patch 1.1 play TCP/IP game on Win2k ? I didn't try it yet but one of the betas i tried didn't work on Win2K.

    PS: My system:

    P3 500Mhz, 256MB ram

    Diamond V770 TNT2 Ultra, Detonator 5.32

    SB Live!

    Win2K + SP1

  4. "I, for one, am rather dissapointed that despite the anecdotal evidence, despite the rather clear explanation of precisely why the Zeiss sight was superior, etc., etc., BTS has chosen to take the low road and just accuse everyone who has made an argument for change as German loving morons. Then, to top it off, you have Slappy accusing anyone who disagrees with him of being "anti-science". What the hell does that mean?

I am going to come right out and say it. I think the objections to the idea that optics could/should be modelled in CM are 95% based on the "CM is prefection incarnate" attitude that is extremely prevalent on this board, despite protestations to the contrary. This is a perfect example of that attitude, but hardly the first example, and probably not the last.

How can a game I love so much result in so damn much frustration?

    Jeff Heidman"

EXACTLY...I agree with Jeff 100%, I can't believe where is all this going. Why don't we all stop for a moment and then look at this issue purely from scientific/historical objective view and resolve this situation. Otherwise the way it goes it won't be good for anyone.

  5. Why are we comparing gyros on some few Shermans with better gun optics being on every German tank ? How the heck are these same ?

So we have all Shermans in the game with gyros in the equation and Germans have no Zeiss optics in the equation at all...how the heck did the gyros made into the game is beyond me. Did anyone reed any books on how gyros were the key in the battles ?

And I believe Combat Mission falls into the trap of being the greatest since sliced bread fantasy. I don't believe it is, it is certainly great and one of the best but Tigers on the Prowl 2 and Panthers in the Shadows are amazing and are certainly there at the top. There is no way that CM is better than these 2 wargames I would say they are equal...at this point that I have observed, my personal view only.

When you connect to Battlefront this is what it says about CM:

"Combat Mission is the ULTIMATE simulation of Squad level WWII combat. There is no wargame in existence that offers the realism and value that this true 3D simulation powerhouse provides. "

Geee guys, you don't model Zeiss optics but CM is ULTIMATE simulation of WW2. How the heck it can be ULTIMATE when it doesn't support Zeiss optics being on every German tank ? What do you mean ULTIMATE ? You mean what's currently out there or what there will ever be ? Based on what do you give that statement ? It's just boldly stated that it is ULTIMATE but it never shows how it is better compared to other WW2 simulations.

I don't want to flame anybody, I like CM and I play a lot (I preordered in 1999), but what's currently happening is a bit too much.

  6. I agree with Jeff Heidman completely, I'm a bit disappointed with Steve's answer I must say. I would say (personal opinion) it was both better guns and better optics adding crew skill and experience. I believe by not giving the Germans better optics factor into the equation is not a good idea/plain wrong.

(No I'm not WW2 German freak)

    Example: Formula 1 racing.

You have great drivers in class of their own(Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher) then you have good drivers (Ralf Schumacher, Barrichello , Fisichella, Frentzen, Coulthard

[some more]) and then the rest. Michael and Mika have the best cars but it takes a great car, great driver and team work to win races.

Saying that tires or car handling isn't part of the equation is just plain wrong. if you give average driver or not proven driver a good car (example Mika Salo) they can do wonders with the car (last year Mika drove well for Ferrari) but he needs team support and more experience to win constantly like Mika H. and Michael do, but put Mika Salo into say into Prost, BAR, Benetton or Jordan and his performance will shift down. Take Damond Hill for example a good driver drove pretty well for Williams the day he went to Arrows his career was over, you don't believe me watch the races for yourself...

End of story from my part, I don't think I have more to say on the subject...

From my point of view german optics should be part of the equation, my personal opinion only.

  7. > One of the funny things was when fighting

    > British had a tea time around 1 - 2 pm no

    > british stopped fighting, so Gemrmans had

    > a smoke break, that's what I call a knight

    > fight

For some reason I can't seems to fix/edit my post so this is really the correct text:

"One of the funny things was when fighting had to be stopped few times because British had a tea time around 1 - 2 pm British stopped fighting, so Gemrmans had a smoke break, that's what I call a knight fight "

    Peter

  8. > The example of the "max range" kill of a

    > target at 14 km (8.7 miles!) by a Flak 88

    > is interesting, but who again (or who

    > else) has confirmed this?

I red this in the following book also:

Panzer Commander : The Memoirs of Colonel Hans Von Luck

    by Hans Von Luck

    ISBN: 0440208025

This book is really great, there are some really funny stories on fighting in North Africa and some excellent stories when Hans Von luck was POW in Russia.

One of the funny things was when fighting had to be stopped few times because British had a tea time around 1 - 2 pm British stopped fighting, so Gemrmans had a smoke break, that's what I call a knight fight smile.gif

88 FLAK just kept shooting at one supply truck just for fun and they scored a hit I believe after 14 shots, or something like that I can post the exact text if anyone is interested...

One of the best books I ever red.

  9. Jim,

If you can get Microsoft Visual C++ say version 5 or 6 go with that and forget Borland. Thrust me on this...

A lot of games gets developed actually in Visual C++ and I think this compiler has the best support for Win32 on PC, my personal point of view of course...

    Peter

PS: Borland 5.0 isn't just worth the trouble

and the pain to deal with it... if you

still want to stick with Borland go with

    Borland C++ Builder...

  10. I will add my candle to the cause. I follow the news since it started and I sincerely hope that the sailors get saved, though I know that at this stage things look very bad. I can image in the horror those guys must go through, Das Boot movie comes to mind a bit...I hope that the British rescue team will complete their mission, last hope for the sailors.

    Peter

  11. Congratulations Henri.

I'm now on turn 34 with All or Nothing scenario and so far I'm lusing some engineers around the bridge area due to some British armor, Tiger is on the way so I hope together with my 88 I can keep the Allies under control. I can't believe I have lost JagPz IV (imobilized) due to running too long on rail trucks...

    Peter

  12. Henri,

No it wasn't me who discussed with you the ARR, yes I was the one I tried to help for the Wittmann Operation, how did that go ?

Well I started playing as German (All for Nothing scenario) so far I'm on turn 12 or so and the British have to yet cross the bridge or go under the bridge. The funny thing is I didn't really knew before the battle started, from where will the British come and so I positioned my 2 mg bunkers the wrong way. Ouch they are gone now though the crew is fine. I put them in a safe place, everything counts you know smile.gif I'm ready for the British...

I just added Madmatt's graphics and sound add-on, wooow what a change ! I love the new grass and trees and sounds are great too except I don't like the tank gun firing sound will have to replace it with something different.

    Now back to front...

    Peter
