  1. I sure wish that I could at least pay a few dollars to upgrade to version 1.09 and be able to get the add ons. I purchased CMSF and gladly paid for the Battlefront patch and plan on buying a couple of the modules down the road. Gamersgate makes it tough to turn down deals, its easier to make an impulse buy when it is only a few dollars, I am not being cheap and trying to get a game for nothing, I have hung in there with Battlefront all the way back to FC2 and the Avalon Hill days. I guess that as I have gotten older I buy fewer games simply because with a life of work and family it can be tough to get in all of the playing time that I would like.

  2. I am thinking about getting DIF. I Have played around with the demo enough to get a feel for the game but I want to compete against others and not just the AI. Has everyone quit playing this game?

On another note I visited Dans' site and checked out the vassal games that he has to offer; looks like some interesting solitare play to be had for fans of old style play.

  3. I am looking to get in a couple of pbem games. Is a ladder up yet?If so it could be easy points for someone, just drop me a line and let me know which scenario that you want to play(I have not played any of the "stock" scenarios so I would like for someone to also play a "blind" game).

  4. Looking for a couple of PBEM games. I have not played through the scenarios(waited on purpose) I am now ready to bone up on the game due to its impeding release.

I should be easy meat for you guys that have played through the demo countless times.

  5. I seem to have a sound problem related to the download. I can get the game to work OK but the only sound I can get is a generic beep at the beginning and a gun sound when I exit the program.

I have a P3 processor with 128 megs of ram, Voodoo3 accelerator card and a ESS Solo 1 PCI Audio Drive card, Windows 98 2nd ED.

When I go to the Wav file and try to open one of them my computer attempts to open aol and take me to a microsoft sit to try and cure the problem i get the following error: 80040200 cannot download the appropiate decompressor file.

Can you tell me what this microsoft gibberish means? I have already loosened security measures and restarted the computer like the site told me but to no avail.

  6. I think that one thing CM should have is a database that can be accessed from the game similar to Over the Reich and Achtung Spitfire. While not giving out tons of armor penetrations, toughness etc. it could give a player a sense of the strengths and weaknessess of a particular piece of equipment or a particular type of unit.

  7. Answer to question:

Computer ASL(Advanced Squad Leader). Seems that AH also tried to get Atomic to computerize the ASL system which spawned the Close Combat series.

Too bad that AH was so far behind everyone else in computer gaming, I do believe that Hasbro is going to convert some of the AH titles to the computer Diplomacy should come out at the end of the year but based on my experiences with Hasbro games(Axis and Allies) in particular do not expect a whole lot.

  8. Tom,

I for one can vouch for BTS as far as AI is concerned. I have all three of the flight games that they have released and the AI is super.I am still working on winning the redstorm campaign in FC2. While I am not an authority on the military the games also seem to have realistic characteristics for the planes involved.I hope that BTS will give us a very thorough manual for CM (My only gripe with AS and OTR).

I do agree with you on the hex based structure of wargames, I like a boardgame style game that has taken advantage of the computer to give me ease of setup, opponents that are a mouse-click away and an AI that I can play either to learn the game or sharpen my skills.

I do not think that CM will revolutionize gaming because the wargaming community is relatively small and the big guys are looking for the quick seller that will make them a bundle.

I quick case in point is Atomic games makers of the Close Combat series.Even though all 3 titles sold over 100,000 copies each, Microsoft dropped them to concentrate on games that will sell in excess of 250,000 copies each! I would dare say that the boys at BTS will be delighted if they can sell 100,000 copies of CM!

  9. This may have already been covered but I do not remember seeing it anywhere: in a game of CM does the computer opponent call in re-enforcements if your squad hangs around too long without achieving victory?

I know that this has been used in AS and OTR. I guess that a squad could call for help if the enemy was lolly-gagging instaed of kicking butt.
