  1. My 2 cents:

I have to agree most with Mavraam.

The pacific by itself would be a little dull and generic. Yet if SC2 were to include the entire world including the pacific, this indeed would be very cool. I think some "shrinking" of some countries and oceans and merging of small countries and islands, would still be required to keep the number of hexes to a minimum, and the game manageable. However, I would not change the unit or map scale at all.

  2. I have started 2 PBEM games, and my opponents have each returned the PBEM files, which I saved to the c:\program files\strategic command\Pbem folder. However, when I select Load PBEM game from the main menu, SC promptly closes and dumps me to the desktop. Everything else is fine (including loading saved games).

    I am running v1.02.

I uninstalled demo, and re-installed SC and pacth over the top of existing program.

    Any thoughts?

  3. Now that I'm embarking on several PBEM games, I'm hoping that we get a heads-up a few days before any new patches are released, which render the current PBEM games unplayable. Then we'll know whether to start new PBEM games or not.

I fondly remember the early days after CMBO was released, and we were getting updated patches it seemed every few days. Only problem was if you updated, it would make your present PBEM games obsolete. While it was nice to have the game updated all the time, sometimes it was a real pain in the @$$.

  4. Let me know as soon as you receive your copy of SC.

When I pre-ordered, the estimated delivery time to Canada was quoted as 2-4 weeks! So I am eager to find out if any copies actually clear our esteemed cutoms offices any sooner than that.

Of course, I'll be quite happy to receive it at all, given the fact I didn't enter a province in the address info box. Hope they figure it out.

  5. Order # 78378

One Question - The order info screen wouldn't accept my province (Ontario), since I am in Canada, and it has "invalid" for the state. Are the people who mail this to me going to figure this out, or will it get lost in the mail?

  6. I have EXACTLY the same problem. The box at the bottom goes black, and I can see only a little bit of text.

I also think it happens after pressing esc to get to desktop or to CMHQ chat when I'm setting up a TCP/IP game. Then I have to finish the game "blind".

I have an ATI 128, so I don't think it has anything to do with the vid card or drivers. I also noticed this only since converting to 1.1. I played at least a dozen TCP/IP with 1.05 and it never happened once. Also, I haven't touched any hardware or drivers for over a year now. Also, I have no mods loaded.

My hunch is it is a bug in 1.1

  7. I periodically will start a new game with the command box at the bottom of the screen is black only with a little bit of white text representing only the unit data and so on.

The actual colored graphics are completely missing, as are the words beside the pop-up command boxes.

This happens periodically, ever since I loaded v1.1. I have no mods loaded. I use ATI rage 128 16mb card.

    Everything else looks normal.

    Any ideas?

  8. Not only was ATR the most disappointing computer game I ever purchased, but it also taught me a couple of valuable life lessons:

    1) Never, ever, trust PC game magazines for honest previews.

    2) My hot new 486-100 was actually a piece of crap.

    3) If in doubt, buy it from EB, even if it is a few bucks more. The poor little computer store owner I bought it from (and returned it to after much begging), went bankrupt a month later (oh, the guilt!).

  9. Picked up the entire series (9 tapes or 26 shows I believe) at a local store here in Toronto for only $80 Canadian (US$50).

It was well worth the price, but some "tread-heads" should be warned that the focus is definitely on the social and political impact of the war, and the grand strategies that were employed. If I recall correctly, there was very little in the way of detailed coverage of weapons and tactics.

  10. Well, I knew I would eventually bugger things up with an upgrade:

I upgraded from latest TCP/IP public beta to v1.1 (W98), and now I'm having the following problems:

    1. I now get intro screen, which proceeds to lock up (black screen) due to my crap ATI card. I somehow managed to avoid this by shutting off intro with original version (back in July), but now it is back!

    2. I copied a shortcut to v1.1 onto my desktop (W98) and it also created PBEM, Scenarios and Saved Games folders (all empty) on desktop. Dunno if this is a problem.

    3. When I manage to skip intro and go to "Play a Game" screen, all scenarios are missing except for Quick Battle. They are still located in Scenarios folder in CMBO, so I know they're there somewhere.

    Can anybody help me????

  11. Today I spotted (and bought of course biggrin.gif) the biggest mother of all WWII books I have ever seen:

    The History of WWII

    Published by Prospero Books

Written by Lt. Col. E. Bauer

    ISBN 1-55267-115-1

This book is BIG. 1,000 pages in all. About 15 pounds, and 4" thick.

It's split into 98 chapters, each covering a major campaign of some sort. For example, to give you an idea of the detail, there are 12 chapters alone covering North Africa (not even inlcuding Malta and the north mediterranean):

    The Duce's Ambitions

    Albania, Taranto, Sidi Barrini

    Tripoli in Danger

    Enter Rommel

    BattleAxe: Struggle on the Frontier

    Tobruk and Malta

    Operation Crusader

    Crisis in the Desert

    Alam Halfa: Rommel's Last Throw

    Alamein

Torch: A Two Front War for Rommel

    Africa: the End

In addition There are about 25 chapters on the east front, 25 on the west front, 10 on the north mediteranean, 20 on Asia, and the rest on air and sea campaigns.

Each chapter is about 10 pages long, and consists of many colour and B&W pics, a couple of maps, and the odd weapon diagram or propaganda poster. The text looks decent, although I've onlt skimmed pieces of it so far. Also, in each chapter you might find a few separate but related articles of interest on key battles, people or weapons. Also listed are detailed OOBs, at the divisional scale.

The maps are not really useful for CM scenario development, as they tend to be operational in scale, not tactical. Most units represented on most maps are divisions.

(The guys playing TOAW must be salivating over this book).

The price was $50 Canadian (about $30 in real money).

The only drawback to this book is it is a little too hefty to be reading on the crapper mad.gif

  12. BUMP

I'd love to see a response from the BTS team to this one.

I should add that what I'm really suggesting is something akin to map selection on CC2 on the zone, where the maps were somewhat known, both sides free to select units up to their allotment, and only the deployment areas were unknown, but opponents usually reviewed the map before starting.. That was the single coolest featue of CC2 multiplayer.

  13. IIRC from a few books I have read, most western allied troops regarded many of the heavier arty shells coming in as the most disturbing. I have read several accounts of how they sounded like "freight trains" rumbling overhead. I believe it was the rotation of the projectile that created most of the noise.

However, the noise always sounded different, depending on the relative position of the observer. In fact, veteran troops could often tell exactly where it was going to hit, based on the pitch of the noise.

Also interesting, is that 88mm shells fired by German FlaK guns make no sound at all, until they have hit or gone past, because they travelled at supersonic speeds.
