  1. Hi all!

I hope everyone is well. I signed up for Geforce NOW recently (nVidia's cloud gaming service). I was surprised to find CMCW on the list of supported titles! It works quite well! The other Steam-released games don't show up though. Does anyone know if there are any plans to support other CM games via Geforce NOW? It's great for people with less powerful rigs who want to play bigger scenarios!

The Suppression meter generally shows you how much fire the unit is currently receiving. The more suppression, the less the pixeltrooper will return fire and observe (i.e. they will cower more the more fire is incoming). With enough supression, they may become pinned, which means they will stay put and ignore movement orders. With further degradation, they will become shaken, which means they won't respond to move OR fire commands. So suppression has the immediate effect of reducing a units output of fire, and eventually it will cause them to be pinned, shaken, panicked, etc., especially if they start taking casualties. The quality of the unit determines how effective suppression is against and how fast morale degrades in the face of continuing suppression.

A unit is "being suppressed" when its suppression meter is lit up. Suppression is a an effect of enemy fire that lasts as long as the fire continues. Pinning is a morale state that endures slightly longer depending on the unit's quality, communication with its leader, etc.

I stand ready to be corrected here; this is me recounting my experience playing the games over time. Others here may be able to give a more detailed and accurate explanation of the mechanics that are happening!

  4. It's a tough call but I'd say CMBN and CMSF are my favorites. Cold War is coming on strong though!

CMSF has such a compelling problem of having all the firepower and toys on the NATO side but not being willing to take casualties. It makes what often seems straightforward become a meticulous and careful engagement to avoid a lucky RPG or ATGM hit by the opfor.

CMBN is just loaded with scenarios and units with all the add ons, and the Normandy terrain (later Holland) provides such challenging situations.

:D Welcome to the Cold War.

For the last few months, something I've found useful to repeat quite a few times is "Shock Force teaches bad habits". The fundamentals of how you manage a tank platoon have not changed since the Second World War, but you can get away with being incredibly sloppy in Shock Force and to a lesser extent in Black Sea - the technological advantage carries a ton of weight for you.

The NTC campaign is a really good example of that. You're usually fighting an Opfor battalion, and you're doing it with a platoon of M60A1. A platoon of Abrams in the same situation would destroy all before them, but the M60A1 needs to be used carefully, masked by terrain, setting up flank shots, etc.

The Soviet optics are significantly worse than the ones on the US armour, but spotting is a percentage game, and if you're taking the kind of lopsided engagements that you can get away with in CMSF, you'll be spotted and killed easily in CMCW. Each Soviet vehicle will spot worse than yours, but the first vehicle to spot usually wins the fight, and the Soviets only need *one* of them to get the spot - if you're taking engagements where five of your vehicles can see twenty of theirs, you'll die very quickly.

I have been learning this the hard way! X D

When I try to fire a white phosphorous shell at a building, I get the error message "Invalid Smoke Target". How come?

In reality, white phosphorous is a dangerous substance that was often used in an anti personel role. Not only does it burn into human flesh, but the smoke is also harmful to inhale. Firing a WP shell through a window would be an effective way of clearing a building.

You can't fire WP into a building! Somebody might get hurt!

  7. Hi all!

Finally got my gaming PC back up and running after being on a Mac laptop for a while. I installed CMBN 4.02 and activated but I can't set the resolution to 1440p, and if I choose Desktop it's all messed up looking.

    Specs:

    GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU

    Ryzen R7 2700X CPU

    16GB RAM

    Asus X470 motherboard

    etc etc

I'm sure there's a solution but my initial forum search didn't turn up anything. Thanks in advance!

Downloading on my Mac now. Will play this evening and report back. Very exciting! I've had enough Tom Clancy's The Division 2, which is frankly abusing the name of a dead man.

CMBN is running as 4.01 on my 2013 MacBook Pro. The changes/resolution already reported are clearly in evidence. BAR men seem to be dropping the hammer in a more sensible fashion and my first mortar attacks on defending Germans in foxholes have seen them hunkering down instead of making a run for it. Seems to have done the trick so far!

If I find anything to complain about... well, you know me. 😃 But Steve and crew have my hundreds of dollars and can expect more for each expansion, so I imagine my complaints won't be TOO hurtful! 😃
