New video card not working with CM

Recommended Posts

I just replaced my old Voodoo 2 card with a 32mb Winfast GeForce 2 MX, and I cannot get any of my games to play. As soon as the 3D engine starts to work, the PC freezes up. I have downloaded the newest Nvidia drivers for the card as well as the newest BIOS update for it. I have a P2 400 on a M6TLC motherboard. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Did you delete the "Combat Mission Bynd Ovr Prefs" file in your CMBO directory? If not, delete it and restart CM. It will take you through the detection again. Of course, you lose all your settings but it's a small price to pay.

Have you uninstalled your Voodoo 2 drivers ? There's a possibility that somehow they're interfering with DirectX calls.

The latest BIOS for your motherboard is dated May 12, 1999 (which makes some changes for IDE drive ATA66 support and minor presentation of CPU speed on the initial display). The M6TLC is based on the Intel LX chipset. The AGP implementation for the LX isn't very good (since it is the first one available and hence supports only the earliest standard for AGP) and there is a possibility that a number of AGP cards won't work with it. There is also the possibility that your motherboard's power handling may not be sufficient enough for the GeForceMX (or most other 32Mb AGP cards). If this is the case, then the only solution would be to purchase a new motherboard.

You may want to reduce the "AGP Aperture Size (MB)" setting in your CMOS/BIOS setup to see if this has any affect on your games (you may not be able to lower it enough for it to be useful). What was your previous primary display card (assuming that your Voodoo 2 wasn't a Banshee-based board) ?
