Entering buildings....door #1, or door#2?

Recommended Posts

In the midst of a heavy firefight, I ordered a squad to sprint into a building. The building had two doors, one facing enemy fire, the other on the opposite side facing a fairly quiet street.

The squad was taken under fire as it ran to the building, two casualties were taken. The rest of the squad continued to the building, but entered on the side facing the enemy risking more casualties.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, probably in the CMSF world, but I need to ask the question anyway. Can you force units to enter a building through a particular door?

I usually can get them to enter through the side I want by making sure that the command movement line intersects the side of the building they are to go through. If they are at an odd angle to the building, it may require a two or even three step movement order, but they do follow it.

Try to stick a way point immediately outside the door you want to use then put the final waypoint in the building, that usually works for me.

One thing I would like to see related to this would be the ability to enter through windows. Been times I've wanted to get in a building where the only door is wide open to enemy fire but the sheltered side has a bunch of windows.

I have had this happen too, sometimes they choose good, and sometimes not. I think they will always choose what door is closest, so if the door you want is further in relation to the unit the only way to be sure they will go to that one is to do like others have said, and that is to issue a waypoint right outside the door you want. This is not desire some times especially if that door is covered by enemy at another position. I have always wonder though if C2 has anything to do with which path a unit will take. Anyone know if C2 is a factor in path choosing?

Yes, making the path obvious is the only way you can be sure the AI will choose the path you want.
