G B Scurlock
I am out of explosives and really need to get through a hedge row at a certain spot. Can I blast a hole there with Tank HE fire? I'm at work or I would try it myself.
YankeeDog
Yep; someone tested this. You can, but it takes a lot of shells -- on the order 15-20 hits from 75mm Sherman HE shells, IIRC. And you're likely to use substantially more than this, because apparently some shells fly through the bocage and don't detonate. So if you're desperate, I guess you can give it a shot... but it it will cost you a fair amount of time and the better part of a Sherman's HE load.
Lanzfeld
Also, if you use the sherman, be careful of friendly troops nearby. The frag pattern is deadly.
womble
Also, if you use the sherman, be careful of friendly troops nearby. The frag pattern is deadly. And large. You're not safe 20m from the point of explosion. And that point can be some distane from the target spot. Note that it's 15-20 hits. Quite a lot were found to pass clean through the hedge.
gunnergoz
If you are doing your own quick battles, the Sherman 105 might be a decent hedge blower-upper. Haven't tried it yet myself but it seems feasible since that 105 projectile is basically the same one as the 105 artillery howitzer uses.
