lettowvorbeck
I didn't want to hijack the previous thread. I just wanted mention that I hope the Airships do not have a strategic bombing ability out of historical proportions. I think you could actually make a good argument that, at the game's strategic scale, it probably isn't even appropriate to have zeppelins and rail guns on the map at all (more appropriate for the tactical/operational scales). xwormwood
Don't worry, they are a nice feature, and very usefull, too, mainly for scouting duties. You can, of course, use them for strategic bombing runs, but they are not very effectice in this role. At least not at reserach level 0. Using them in any role "feels" very historical correct, so to speak.
Snowstorm
I agree with XW. It's not as if these airships will have the effects of a V1 or 2 rocket.
lettowvorbeck
I just hope they are never given the ability to actually eliminate corps, no matter what their research level. I have these visions of a couple of airship units battering a depleted 2 strength corps into final oblivion. I would vote to not allow them to cause any strength point losses. xwormwood
Believe me: after the first more or less fruitless tries you won't use them for this purpose anymore, at least not willingly or with much hope of success. Even though they might be able to get lucky once in a while, you simply won't use them in this way. At least i don't. I keep them near the coast, to prevent unhappy surprises from the english coast lines. But if you are able to knock out a strength 1 detachment or corps, than you will remember this lucky day of yours for many game turns to come. It is not completly impossible, but not very likely at all. And if your opponent has fighters, than you won't have many chances to attack a land unit anyway... tommyguns
So what you all are saying is that it is worthless to use the airships to bomb ports or cities? Only use for them is as recon, right?
xwormwood
I fear there is no such an easy or simple answer. They might very well give you the edge in a close battle, but you shouldn't count on their all time success: they are children of their time, so to speak. Bill101
It all depends on how much research you can afford to invest in them, because without any upgrades they aren't very useful. You'll have to weigh up between an extra Corps or two and improved Airships, and if fighting is raging at the gates of Paris or Warsaw then a better Airship probably won't be top of your agenda. They can become a nice little weapon once upgraded, just as long as enemy Fighters don't intercept them. That can be painful!
tommyguns
Thanks for your answers XW & Bill101!!! If the airship stays close to their respective frontlines and fighters for an attack, will they have fighter support or an option there of? Bill101
Fighters can escort them, but the range of their Fighter escorts is generally going to be less than the Airship's range. This means that Fighters will need upgrading with Long Range Aircraft, but as Airships also get upgrades to their range from Airship research, there is always a good chance of outdistancing your escorts... making your Airships prey to well placed enemy Fighters.
