Win2K/K7/Rage Fury (yet more video ??s)

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have perused the many, many reports (good and bad) about trying to get CM to run on various hardware configurations but haven't seen any sort of definitve recommendation for the following senario:

1. I'm running Win2K on a 900MHz AMD K7/ABIT KT7 Mobo with Rage Fury Pro AGP video card. I have tried every imaginable upgrade/downgrade of BIOS, CMOS and driver configurations and so far have not been able to get CM to run in anything but software emulation mode at 640x480 (ugh!). Anyone been able to make a configuraion like this work?

2. If the answer to Q1 above is "no", can anyone recommend an inexpensive video card alternative to my current Rage Fury Pro that would work in my system? Since I'm otherwise peffectly happy with the Rage I don't want to spend any more than I have to.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

- Chris

Your problem may just be Ein2K. We have 20 copies at work on 15 machines, and last weekend I searched for one that would work for a game, to no avail. Worked like a charm on a copy of Win XP Beta 5b18 oddly enough.

I believe I've had a Rage 128 Pro board working in Win2K with CM (as a test), but not on the motherboard that you're using.

However, I've had many problems with the ATI drivers supplied by Microsoft in Windows 2000 and I've had to resort to using ATI's drivers just to get the system running properly. The Setup program would hang with many Rage-series cards and MS' drivers, requiring me to resort putting another video card into to do the install and then swap out and install the ATI card (I suspect that some Video BIOS versions on the ATI cards don't cooperate with the MS supplied ATI drivers). Is your card even being recognized properly by Win2K ? What driver are you currenlty using with it ? What version of DirectX do you have installed ? Do you have any of the appropriate VIA drivers installed, especially the AGP drivers ?

What exactly do you see (or don't see) when you try to launch CM with hardware rendering ?

ATI Rage 128 Pro drivers (including Beta 3225 drivers):

VIA KT133 drivers (4-in-1 4.32v):

From an FAQ for the Abit KT7 m/b:

Some users have reported that their KT7 system fail to boot up with an Asus V7700 AGP card or that there is no video signal. If you experience this issue, raise the I/O voltage slightly to 3.4v. On the other hand, ATI Xpert 98 AGP cards may display a corrupt screen with an I/O voltage higher than 3.4V. Xpert 98 users should make sure your I/O voltage remains at the default.

While the ATI Xpert 98 isn't the same as the Rage Fury Pro, it is similar enough to probably follow this advice.

Here's an independent FAQ site for the KT7:

I don't know how applicable this MS KB article is to your problem (your particular video card isn't mentioned, though this is a generic fix for AGP cards), but you may want to try out the registry fix. This may already be implementd by the latest Service Pack or VIA driver package:

To clarify, I am able to run CM fine, but ONLY in Graphics Emulation mode (which are limited to 640x480). All other graphic modes fail (unreadable/hosed-up graphics) during the CM graphic diagnostic when starting up after deleting CM prefs. I can actually run CM in these modes but get the classic colored lines and transparent text that make it unusable.

Would still love to hear any recommendations for a low-cost video card that is KNOWN good with CM - ideally with Win2K and K7 chipsets...

Thanks...
