You do not need to use an ftp client. You need a browser that is capable of handling an ftp connection. Most are, by default, unless you change their settings. Chrome isn't supporting ftp at all, and as far as I know it's the only one that isn't. Other things that may block ftp on your end are your firewall or proxy settings, and I guess anti-virus, too.

I'm running AVG 9.0, haven't made any changes to it or Firefox (except for the usual updates and the FireFTP addon.

This is first obstacle encountered with any kind of downloading of files, so I assume it must be ftp related; sent a support email to AVG explaining the situation.
