Any bones and/or progress reports on CM:Normandy?

Recommended Posts

I have been following all of Steve's posts in the past months regarding the progress and development of CM:Normandy, but these updates have tended to be more of passing comments.

So . . .

Hows CM:Normandy coming? 2009 release looking good? Any details on the direction of the new QB system? Any screenshots to share? Did the space lobsters make the final cut for Allied OOB and TO&E?

Thanks in advance

Chad

Sadly, the Normandy game has been delayed. Here's a direct quote from Steve.

Easy guys, I put my pants on just like the rest of you, one leg at a time. Except, once my pants are on I make good wargames. I'm telling you, fellas your gonna want more cowbell in there. So we're gonna have to delay the game to explore the space and put more cowbell in.

I gotta have that cowbell!

Steve

Disclaimer: This is a bogus quote, Steve and I are not responsible for the doom and despair caused by the reading of this quote. But if Steve did in fact want more cowbell then we should probably listen to him. Last time I checked there's not many wargames that feature the cowbell.

And remember, you can never have enough cowbell. :P

CM Normandy is not going to happen for a while - There are many reasons for this - disagreements on strategy (certain partners favour the indirect approach), a lack of landing craft and the weather is a bit dodgy. In the meantime - there is plenty of WW2 stuff out there to amuse you (including many Battlefront titles). Or you could dip your toe in the water of the contemporary environment ... just a thought.

We're done with testing. The beta testers have been playing with the finished product for months now, we just feel it is too good to be released to the general public. Charles and Steve have taken a vow of poverty and don't want to feed the capitalist beast that has cause such worldwide chaos so recently.

Happy about that - I can't afford it for a few years now

Progress report is much the same as previous reports... we're working on it and things are going well. It will be a while before the testers have anything to beat on. That's partly because we don't need testing for a while yet and also party to make sure the Brits get full attention. We expect to have something ready for the testers to start beating on around the time that the Brit Module rolls out the door. Only a select few will be using Tigers and Shermans a day earlier than that :D

As a quick, and meaningless tidbit, today and tomorrow Charles is finishing up putting in WWII vehicle/weapons data. Oh and cowbells. Gotta have more cowbells this time around, that's for sure!

If you go to the editor, buy a fanatic veteran T-54 platoon for the Red side, then change it to a Blue vs Blue battle and the date to June 6th, it becomes a Tiger platoon. But it only works when the actual date is June 6th, so you will have to wait six months to see them.

Want to see working wristwatches on individual soldiers? That'll take months to write the code for right there!

You're right. That would be silly and unnecessary.

A far better use of Charles' coding time would be an indicator showing how much water (or other liquid) is left in each soldier's canteen. This should also specify the identity of the alternate liquid, if any, as well as its vintage and which side of the hill the grapes grew on. This I regard as an essential "make or break" item.

And don't forget the African swallows this time, m'kay? I know, you are probably asking yourself what African swallows would have to do with a game set in Normandy, France. You have heard of annual migrations, haven't you? And you do realize that even in Europe June most often occurs during the summer? Must I connect all the dots for you?

Does that mean we will have cows as flavor objects?

Yes we need dead cows as flavor objects but don't make them Holsteins. Holsteins weren't as common in 1944 as they are today, especially in Normandy where there exists a fine breed of cattle know as-get this- the Normande. I think the whole Holstein fixation we have today is due to Hollywood getting cows from the nearest dairy farms in the Chino area of Southern California where most of them are indeed Holsteins. No need to repeat that mistake!
