M. Bates
What is it like, is it too warm? Got some spare time right now, thinking of going to New York for shopping, sightseeing, museums etc. Never been before BTW. http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/10001
YankeeDog
We have a saying here in NYC and the U.S. Northeast about the weather, "If you don't like it, wait a minute. . ." Today it's hot (high 80s F), but I was just outside and it's not too humid so it's bearable. This weekend, it's scheduled to be grey and rainy a good part of the time as the leftovers of a hurricane pass through. Overall, temps this time of year are usually fairly pleasant, with highs usually in the low to mid 70s, and lows the 60s. But there's considerable deviation from the norm; it's not unusual to get a few days of hot (90+) summer-like weather at some point in September, and it can at times swing the other way, with cool nights in the low 50s. But on average, this is a pretty good time of year around here as far as weather goes; the smelly sticky dog days of August are past, but the cold rains of October and November are still a few weeks away. Just check the advance forecast a day or two before you leave to see if anything abberant is expected. Cheers, YD
Blackhorse
The weather up there is pretty decent this time of year. You'll make a killing due to the exceptional exchange rate for your Pound. Be sure to travel with virtually empty suitcases so that you can stock up and take back all the goodies you acquire.
Philippe
It's a little on the warm side this year, payback for having had what felt like a relatively cool August. September and October are really good months to visit New York, but be sure to miss the opening of the next U.N session, because that will burn through the little hotel space there is. New York is the home of several world class art museums, and a contemporary art scene that rivals anything in Europe. The galleries have been shifing from their old locations, so if you're interested in that kind of thing your guidebooks may or may not be up to date. You can get some of it on-line, but when you get to New York any self-respecting gallery will have free copies of the Gallery Guide, which has very detailed area maps of the galleries and lists of which ones are having openings on which nights (cheap wine and sweaty cheese, though there are a few spectacular exceptions). Openings are not by invitation only, and are a good place to meet local artists, many of whom are single and female.
Michael Emrys
...a good place to meet local artists, many of whom are single and female. And randy as a bonobo on coke. I spent a couple of nice autumns in NYC. Probably the best time of the year to be there, although spring might be nice too. Hakko Ichiu
Yes, September in NYC is probably as good a time as any. Hurricane Hannah will have blown through by the weekend, clearing the way for decent weather after that. Dollar has strengthened a bit against sterling, but NYC is still a bargain compared to Blighty.
akd
I hear the global warming is terrible this time of year.
