Hobbit movie

This might be of interest to some:

After plenty of speculation, Sir Ian McKellen has finally confirmed he will return in the role of Gandalf in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming “The Hobbit.”

According to Empire Online, McKellen is pretty excited about traveling back to Middle Earth. At a recent screening of “The Dark Knight,” the “X-Men” actor said he will be a part of “The Hobbit” although he hasn’t signed a contract yet.

McKellen also said he’s looking forward to working with del Toro and Andy Serkis, who is also returning in the role of Gollum. Peter Jackson is producing.

They can hire extras locally, if some of their main characters die during the shoot.

Obviously, local talent would fit better in nondescript Hobbit roles, but given synergies what filming at actual Middle Earth settings gives to the filming crew, they can set up a searching party of some sort for locating some talent (or missing items) if a need arises. Some characters or at least their direct descendants are still alive at this age of ours, having a ball while being working professionals, probably blending with the local populace, being involved with almost excessive sheep and goat herding habits. Or Hobbits.

Gandalf is not a human, normal aging does not apply. If they can make him look the same age as last time, mission accomplished.

Yeah true, Gandalf was very old by the hobbit era, and still very old in the LOTR era. McKellen similarly was old then and is old now.

And really his part in the hobbit is not so big anyway.

Eh? Haven't read it in a few years but according to my recollection Gandalf has more to do in The Hobbit then in LotR.

Nope. He is on the page a lot more in LotR. I think his big contribution to The Hobbit is right at the beginning, although he does put in a brief appearance or two later on. Can't tell yet if the movie will retain that same balance.
