Painting skins video tutorial

Recommended Posts

These video tutorials are meant to get you started in the art of painting skins.

The focus is on basic Photoshop techniques, although you can transfer the concepts to any image manipulation software that has similar capabilities.

There are many ways and styles that can be used to paint skins. I tried to concentrate on what I think are the most simple and efficient for the beginner.

The skins done for CM:SF are fabulous works, created by a few very talented artists. This tutorials will not make you become one of them right away. It will take a lot more learning and practice, not to mention talent. But hopefully it will put you on the right track.

Coming soon! (Being uploaded to the server)

Tutorial 1 - Introduction

Tutorial 2 - Creating a base texture

Tutorial 3 - Creating volume.

Tutorial 4 - Adding Drop Shadows (you need to unRAR this one)

Tutorial 5 - Adding some screws

Tutorial 6 - Some fast and easy effects

Tutorial 7 - Working with more complex shapes

Wow, this is so weird! I was just thinking the other day that I wish someone would do some kind of tutorial on skinning. Excellent, I can't wait to view these vids.

Thanks!

Mord.

Yeah, I´m still getting used to the new format!

Please let me know what you think after you watch them. I might do some others to address other specific issues.

I shall do that.

These were pretty good. I learned some stuff about Adobe that I didn't know. I'd say they are best for people that have some art skills and know their way around a graphics editor. Anybody that has some modding talent will definitely benefit from the little details you put into your texture.

LOL you reminded me of Bob Ross (an American painter that used to be on TV). He'd always add some little thing to his paintings and I'd be like, he's gonna screw it up and it would always end up looking better. I kept waiting for you to say "...and this little screw needs a happy friend, here's one, he'll live right over here and they can chat and and be neighbors." You would have to have seen the show to get what I am saying.

I'd be very interested to see a tutorial on how to make a preexisting vehicle or uniform look dirty. Or how to texture uniforms. My art skills are mediocre at best and a few tips like those could help me to do some of the more basic graphic tweaking. LOL I am not so confident I could do much more, like paint and entire tank or what not.

Anyways...Great job man.

Hey Mord,

Thanks for the feedback.

The idea for these tutorials was because I wanted to show a friend that already mods how to go about painting the textures as opposed to only manipulating what already exists.

You don´t actually need to do anything from scratch but knowing some of these techniques can help you loads when manipulating existing textures.

I´m thinking of doing a tutorial where you would just grab a texture that already exists and go changing it. Look here in a week or so.

I guess if you start modifying textures then you might later want to carry on to painting which is in fact more advanced.

Good work Webwing,

I have to give you a lot of credit, you have an excellent eye for detail, shading and volume.

You did everything by hand, using only the Selection and Brush tools, that takes a lot of talent.

There is no way I could achieve those 3D effects freehand, when I attempt to make anything similiar I have to use the Blend & Layer Styles.

To add to Mord's suggestion, if you have the time, could you make a tutorial detailing how the CMSF texture files work, how they are "mirrored", how Alpha Channels work, etc...

tc237,

Thanks.

Like I said, I´ll do a tutorial like you guys asked in the near future.

As to how to do the textures, it really doesn´t mater which tools or techniques you use, but the final result. There are many ways to do things, but they must look good in the end.

Painting textures is not simple but I believe if you follow step by step what I did in those videos, you will be able to get pretty close. And it can be very rewarding!

Crom092,

Thank you!

Yes, there is a problem with #4.

I´m uploading again. I´ll post the link here and ask (once more:o) for Moon to updated for me.

I had quite a few problems with Mediafire this time. Not sure why. Anyway, should be up soon.
